HENDERSON, NV (May 2, 2025) — The College of Southern Nevada Lady Coyotes jumped out to an early lead but couldn't hold off a fifth-inning surge by Eastern Arizona College, falling 5-2 in game two of the four-game ACCAC series at Lady Coyote Field. With the loss, CSN drops to 25-22 overall and 17-13 in conference play. The series resumes Saturday at 11:00 a.m., following a special Sophomore Day ceremony.
CSN struck first in the opening frame, stringing together hits from
Camryn Hunkins,
Jimena Barraza-Caro, and
Justice Lavin to plate two early runs. Lavin drove in the first run with a single to center, while
Mattingly Mauzey brought home the second on a fielder's choice.
Freshman
Mckenna Cahoon got the start in the circle and pitched a complete game, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts over seven innings. Cahoon worked around traffic for much of the game, keeping the Gila Monsters off balance until a decisive four-run fifth inning.
Eastern Arizona began chipping away in the second with a rare steal of home by Gianna Villegas, then broke through in the fifth. Back-to-back singles by Reese McFarland and V Gavigan set the table, followed by an RBI single from Maddie Reed and a two-run knock from Taylor Christensen that gave EAC a 4-2 lead. Christensen would later score on a passed ball to cap the inning.
Despite outhitting EAC 6-5 through the first four innings, the Lady Coyotes couldn't reignite their offense against EAC starter Marianna Zumerle, who threw a complete game to earn the win. Zumerle allowed just two runs on six hits, striking out one and inducing 12 groundouts.
Barraza-Caro led CSN at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three singles, while Lavin, Hunkins, and Jrew-Marie Mina each added a hit. CSN's best late scoring opportunity came in the sixth when
Miken Jacobsen walked and advanced to second on a passed ball, but the Coyotes left her stranded.
Eastern Arizona's defense turned a key double play in the fifth to kill a CSN rally, and the visitors committed two errors overall. Despite the outcome, CSN played clean defensively and didn't commit an error.
The Coyotes will look to bounce back in game three on Saturday morning. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. with Sophomore Day celebrations preceding the action at Lady Coyote Field.
