PRESCOTT, Ariz. — With postseason positioning on the line, the College of Southern Nevada women's volleyball team delivered when it mattered most Wednesday night, rallying from an opening-set loss to defeat Yavapai College in four sets, 17-25, 27-25, 25-23, 28-26, in the Lady Coyotes' final ACCAC match of the regular season.
The victory secured the No. 3 seed in the NJCAA Region 1 Division I playoffs for Southern Nevada, setting up a semifinal showdown against Eastern Arizona College on Monday, Nov. 2, in Thatcher, Arizona.
After dropping back-to-back matches against nationally ranked Arizona Western over the weekend, the Lady Coyotes responded with a determined performance against the Roughriders, winning three consecutive sets, including two that required extra points, to close conference play on a winning note.
Freshman Tayla Singleton powered the Southern Nevada offense with a match-high 21 kills on 42 attempts while hitting .310. Singleton also recorded seven digs and two service aces, finishing with a match-high 23 points to lead the Lady Coyotes.
Southern Nevada struggled to establish its offensive rhythm in the opening set, recording 13 kills but committing nine attack errors while hitting just .111. Yavapai capitalized on the opportunities, taking the first set 25-17 to put the Lady Coyotes in an early hole.
CSN responded with an impressive offensive performance in the second, recording 18 kills and hitting .237. The Roughriders countered with 15 kills and a .353 hitting percentage, but Southern Nevada prevailed in a tightly contested 27-25 decision to even the match.
The Lady Coyotes carried that momentum into the third set, delivering their most efficient offensive performance of the evening. CSN recorded 14 kills with just four errors on 30 attempts, hitting .333 while holding Yavapai to a .276 mark. Southern Nevada edged the Roughriders 25-23 to take a two-set-to-one advantage.
With the match hanging in the balance, the fourth set provided another dramatic finish. Southern Nevada recorded 18 kills while hitting .282, but Yavapai refused to go quietly. The teams battled beyond the regulation 25-point mark before the Lady Coyotes closed out the match with a 28-26 victory, completing the comeback and securing their postseason position.
Paige Gates delivered one of her strongest performances of the season, recording eight kills without committing an attack error on 11 attempts for an impressive .636 hitting percentage. Gates also dominated from the service line, finishing with a match-high six aces and 14 points.
Mia Scott provided another key offensive contribution with 11 kills, while LillyAnne Christensen turned in an efficient performance with five kills on seven attempts without an error, hitting .714. Briley Fawson added six kills, helping Southern Nevada finish with 63 kills and a .238 team hitting percentage.
Setter Libbie Ferreiro directed the Lady Coyotes' offense with 39 assists while adding three kills, two service aces and 11 digs. Ferreiro's distribution helped Southern Nevada record 18 kills in both the second and fourth sets.
Defensively, Isabella Liugalua anchored the back row with a team-high 14 digs, while Kody Wengler and Ferreiro each contributed 11. Madison Ortiz added seven digs and two service aces as the Lady Coyotes totaled 64 digs in the victory.
Southern Nevada's serving proved to be another difference-maker, with the Lady Coyotes recording 14 service aces compared with 10 for Yavapai. Gates accounted for six of those aces, while Singleton, Ferreiro, Wengler and Ortiz each added two.
Yavapai was led by Mackenzie Strader, who finished with 13 kills, while Keyara Haywood added 11 kills on 22 attempts and hit .455. Despite the Roughriders finishing with a .256 team hitting percentage, Southern Nevada held a decisive 63-45 advantage in kills to secure the victory.
The win also completed a three-match season sweep of Yavapai, with Southern Nevada having previously defeated the Roughriders twice at the Coyote Event Center earlier in October.
With the regular-season conference schedule complete, the Lady Coyotes now shift their attention to postseason competition and an opportunity to advance in the Region 1 tournament.
No. 3 seed Southern Nevada will travel to Thatcher, Arizona, to face No. 2 seed Eastern Arizona College in the NJCAA Region 1 Division I semifinals on Monday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. local time. The Lady Coyotes finished 1-2 against the Gila Monsters during the regular season and will look to even the season series while keeping their postseason hopes alive.
