LAS VEGAS — The College of Southern Nevada's annual cross country meet has continued to get bigger. On Saturday morning at Floyd Lamb Park, it reached another level.
A record 857 entries representing 58 teams descended on Floyd Lamb Park for the fifth annual CSN Invitational, the largest field in the history of an event that has evolved into a showcase for high school and middle school cross country in Southern Nevada.
For the third consecutive year, CSN dedicated the meet exclusively to high school and middle school competition, using the Invitational as a fundraiser for the Coyotes' men's and women's cross country programs while giving young runners from throughout the region an opportunity to compete in a large invitational setting.
The result was a morning featuring six races and hundreds of athletes, beginning with the boys varsity 5K at 7:45 a.m. and concluding with the girls middle school race. Finished Results served as the meet's official timing provider.
The varsity boys opened the day with one of the morning's fastest performances.
Bishop Gorman junior Aaden Moyer captured the individual championship in 15:23.3, finishing more than 21 seconds ahead of Arbor View senior Pierson Butler, who was second in 15:44.8. Green Valley senior Reese Leoncavallo placed third in 15:52.2.
Shadow Ridge used its depth to capture the boys varsity team championship with 77 points. Five Mustangs finished between 12th and 20th overall, giving Shadow Ridge a five-runner average of 16:55 and a 21-second scoring spread. Bishop Gorman finished second with 88 points, while Desert Oasis was third with 93.
The girls varsity race belonged to Desert Oasis.
Sophomore Lola Borsh won the individual 5K championship in 18:42.4, leading a Diamondbacks lineup that placed five scoring runners among the top 21 overall. Desert Oasis finished with 40 points to edge Shadow Ridge, which scored 46. Bishop Gorman placed third with 90 points.
Alexandra Herchik of Coral Academy of Science was second individually in 19:04.6, while Desert Oasis junior Isabella Bustillos-Rivera finished third in 19:30.6.
The depth of the meet continued into the Varsity B races. Shadow Ridge swept the first four places and put seven runners among the top eight in the boys race, finishing with just 16 points. Freshman Lucas Larsen led the Mustangs with a winning time of 17:25.1.
In the girls Varsity B race, Shadow Ridge freshman Kaelynn Carter won individually in 23:27.8, while Arbor View captured the team championship with 29 points. Desert Oasis was second with 41.
The middle school races provided two more individual champions and another large wave of young runners across the Floyd Lamb Park course.
Lied STEM Academy sixth-grader Deshawn Turner won the boys 2.1-mile race in 11:13.9. Gunderson Middle School captured the team championship with 34 points, placing four runners among the first eight finishers. Lied STEM was second with 46 points.
Gunderson eighth-grader Adelyn Gerard closed the day's championship racing with a victory in the girls 2.1-mile race, crossing in 12:18.9. Faith Lutheran earned the girls middle school team title with 57 points, followed by Somerset Sky Pointe with 68 and Gunderson with 87.
For CSN, however, Saturday's biggest number wasn't found on the stopwatch.
It was 857.
Now in its fifth year, the CSN Invitational has grown from its beginnings as an event that included collegiate racing into a meet centered on the area's high school and middle school programs. The past three editions have been devoted to those younger divisions, with proceeds from the event supporting CSN cross country.
This year's record field of 857 entries from 58 teams marked the latest step in that growth, turning the Coyotes' home course at Floyd Lamb Park into one of the busiest cross country venues in the valley Saturday morning.
Six races, dozens of teams and hundreds of runners later, the fifth CSN Invitational had become something considerably larger than where it started — and provided another glimpse of the next generation of runners coming through Southern Nevada.
