MESA, Ariz. — The College of Southern Nevada volleyball team battled back to even the match after dropping the opening set, but Mesa Community College regained control over the final two frames to hand the Lady Coyotes a 3-1 loss Thursday night in Mesa.
Southern Nevada fell 25-16, 23-25, 25-15, 25-16, moving to 2-2 on the season. The match was the second of back-to-back contests against Mesa during CSN's two-day trip to Arizona.
After Mesa controlled the opening set, the Lady Coyotes responded with their best offensive performance of the night in the second. CSN recorded 15 kills and hit .205 in the frame, doing enough down the stretch to secure a 25-23 victory and pull even at one set apiece.
Mesa answered immediately. The Thunderbirds held Southern Nevada to a .000 hitting percentage in both the third and fourth sets while steadily improving their own attack. Mesa took the third 25-15 before hitting .278 with 15 kills in the fourth to close out the match, 25-16.
Freshman outside hitter Tayla Singleton paced the Lady Coyotes with 11 kills and added 15 digs for a double-double. She also contributed a service ace and two block assists, finishing with a team-high 13 points. Freshman Briley Fawson added nine kills, while LillyAnne Christensen finished with five kills on 16 attempts and a team-best .250 hitting percentage. Player names and classifications were verified against CSN's 2026 roster.
Sophomore setter Libbie Ferreiro directed the offense with 26 assists and added 14 digs, while sophomore Kody Wengler contributed 10 assists and eight digs. CSN finished with 53 digs as a team, led by Singleton's 15 and Ferreiro's 14.
The difference came in Mesa's ability to sustain its attack. The Thunderbirds finished with 49 kills and a .223 hitting percentage, compared with 36 kills and a .094 percentage for Southern Nevada. Mesa also held advantages in blocks and service aces.
The Lady Coyotes will return to action Friday, Sept. 4, when they travel to Prescott, Arizona, for a four-match weekend. CSN opens the trip against Gillette College at 11 a.m., followed by a 3 p.m. match against Justice College. The Lady Coyotes will then face Phoenix College and Colorado Northwestern Community College on Saturday.
