NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The College of Southern Nevada controlled much of the attacking play and more than doubled Mohave College's shot total Saturday night, but an early goal proved to be the difference as the Lady Coyotes fell 1-0 at Cheyenne Sports Complex.
Southern Nevada outshot Mohave 14-6, including a 9-3 advantage in the opening half, and generated six corner kicks to Mohave's two. The Lady Coyotes put five attempts on goal but were unable to find the equalizer in the ACCAC conference matchup.
Mohave scored what proved to be the game's only goal in the 17th minute. Courtney Howard converted an assist from Alayna Littlewood at 16:19 to give the Bighorns a 1-0 advantage.
CSN responded by putting consistent pressure on the Mohave defense. Leslie Villegas forced goalkeeper Jacky Claro into saves in the 26th and 35th minutes, while Iliana Arias put another attempt on frame in the 35th. The Lady Coyotes also earned four first-half corner kicks but went into the break trailing by a goal.
Southern Nevada continued searching for the equalizer throughout the second half. Cristal Lara, Jazlyn Chavez and Savannah Foschetti each generated opportunities before Chavez had a shot blocked in the 78th minute. CSN earned consecutive corner kicks late in the half as it continued to press forward.
One of the Lady Coyotes' best late opportunities came in the 84th minute when Jacqueline Acosta put a shot on goal, but Claro made the save to preserve the shutout.
Chavez led Southern Nevada with three shots, while Villegas, Foschetti, Lara and Acosta each finished with two. Villegas put both of her attempts on target. Madison English played all 90 minutes in goal for CSN, allowing the lone score and making one save.
The loss dropped Southern Nevada to 1-4-2 overall and 0-3-0 in ACCAC play, while Mohave improved to 3-4-0 overall and 1-2-0 in conference action.
The Lady Coyotes now head back on the road for another conference matchup, traveling to Prescott, Arizona, to face Yavapai College on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m.
