NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Gillette College struck twice in the opening nine minutes and pulled away late to hand the College of Southern Nevada men's soccer team a 5-0 loss Saturday afternoon at the Cheyenne Sports Complex.
Playing Gillette for the second time in as many days after the teams battled to a 2-2 draw Friday, the Coyotes found themselves chasing the match almost immediately. Noel De Bois put Gillette in front in the fifth minute before Kevin Amegee doubled the advantage at the 8:26 mark.
Southern Nevada goalkeeper Ulises Mier helped keep the deficit at two through the remainder of the opening half. Gillette continued to generate opportunities, but Mier made seven first-half saves as the Coyotes went into halftime trailing 2-0.
CSN began to find more opportunities after the break. Brody Vela produced the Coyotes' first shot in the 55th minute, while Juan Marco Guerrero and Jaxon Law added attempts later in the half. Southern Nevada also earned three of its four corner kicks after halftime.
Gillette, however, put the match away over the final 14 minutes.
Oscar Valtierra extended the lead to 3-0 in the 77th minute before Josh Tuck scored twice in a span of 56 seconds, finding the net at 82:18 and again at 83:14 to produce the final margin.
Gillette finished with a 20-3 advantage in shots and placed 14 attempts on goal. Mier played all 90 minutes in goal for Southern Nevada and finished with nine saves.
The loss dropped the Coyotes to 1-5-1 on the season, while Gillette improved to 3-1-2.
Southern Nevada now turns its attention to conference play. The Coyotes open their ACCAC schedule Saturday, Sept. 12, when they travel to Yuma, Arizona, to face Arizona Western College at 4:30 p.m.
