NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The College of Southern Nevada appeared headed for a convincing victory Saturday night before Gillette College mounted a furious late comeback, scoring three times over the final 18 minutes to earn a 3-3 draw with the Lady Coyotes at Cheyenne Sports Complex.
CSN built a 3-0 advantage behind goals from Alexa Alvarenga, Jazlyn Chavez and Jacqueline Acosta, but Gillette erased the deficit with the equalizer coming in the 89th minute. The result moved Southern Nevada to 1-1-2 on the season.
The Lady Coyotes grabbed the lead in the 30th minute. Cristal Lara set up Alvarenga, who converted at 29:31 to send CSN into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.
Southern Nevada wasted little time adding to the lead after the break. Chavez struck in the 51st minute to make it 2-0 before CSN seemingly took command in the 69th minute.
This time Alvarenga turned provider, setting up Acosta for a goal at 68:51 that pushed the Lady Coyotes' advantage to 3-0. Alvarenga finished the night with a goal and an assist, while Lara and Acosta also played roles in a balanced CSN attack.
Gillette, however, responded almost immediately.
Haven Ivins scored at 72:50 to get the Pronghorns on the board, and just 85 seconds later Mia Rosenvall scored off an assist from Lexi Wells to suddenly cut CSN's advantage to 3-2.
The Lady Coyotes held that one-goal margin deep into the closing minutes before Gillette completed the comeback. Elizabeth Brown scored at 88:12 off an assist from Erika Martinez, leveling the match at 3-3.
Gillette applied considerable pressure throughout the match, finishing with a 22-11 advantage in shots and putting 12 attempts on goal. Madison English helped keep Southern Nevada in front for much of the night, recording nine saves while playing all 90 minutes in goal.
CSN was efficient with its opportunities, putting six of its 11 shots on frame and converting three of them. Chavez led the Lady Coyotes with three shots, while Lara also attempted three.
The draw was CSN's second of the young season and came against a Gillette squad that remained unbeaten at 3-0-2.
Southern Nevada now turns its attention to its first road trip into Arizona. The Lady Coyotes travel to Yuma, Arizona, to face Arizona Western College on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m.
