Las Vegas, NV- The College of Southern Nevada Coyotes were looking forward to this past weekend for multiple reasons. The Coyotes had an 8 game win streak at home and wanted to improve upon it. More importantly, the team was thrilled to be away from the Colorado snow, and under the Las Vegas sunshine. After splitting the series with the Colorado Northwestern Community College Spartans, the Coyotes were looking to get back on track this weekend against Utah State University Eastern Golden Eagles. CSN had defeated USU Eastern just a few weekends ago with the final score of 10 to 2. Projected first round draft pick Phil Bickford took the mound in game one, and looked to start things off right for the Coyotes.
Â
Phil Bickford had complete control of all of his pitches, especially his fastball, which was topping out at 96 mph. Through 5 innings, Bickford had not allowed a hit, and only one walk and struck out 12 batters. The only problem was that opposing pitcher, Sean Hardman, was also throwing a no-hitter. After back to back two out walks in the bottom of the 7
th inning, second baseman Drew Newson delivered a RBI single to break the scoreless tie. The Coyotes tacked on 4 more runs to take a 5 to 0 lead over the Golden Eagles. Pitcher Kayden Porter, who relieved Phil Bickford after the 6
th inning, entered the 9
th inning without allowing a hit either. With two outs in the top of the 9
th, the combined no-hitter was broken up by pinch hitter Jordan Mellen, with a single to center field. The Coyotes finished the 9
th inning without allowing a run, finishing game one of the series with a victory.
Â
Friday's double header had Aj Jones starting in the first game. The Utah State University Eastern Golden Eagles took a one run lead in the 2
nd inning behind a RBI single from left fielder Greg Ashley. The Coyotes answered with back to back RBI singles by Jose Verdugo and Kenny Meimerstorf in the bottom of the 3
rd inning. Golden Eagle's left fielder, Greg Ashley, was at it again with another RBI single in the 4
th inning, tying the score at 2 runs a piece. Coyote's designated hitter, Mason Hayes, delivered a RBI single of his own in the bottom of the 4
th inning to take the lead 3 to 2. The 3 runs would be all that was needed for a 3 to 2 victory for the Coyotes.Â
Â
Game two of the double header was very interesting to say the least. The Coyotes jumped to an early lead with 3 runs in the 2
nd inning. In the top of the 4
th, a controversial no-swing call and some choice words from CSN's Head Coach Nick Garritano, led to Coach Garritano's ejection from the ball game. The Golden Eagles scored two runs that inning, and one more in the 5
th, tying the game at 3 runs apiece. Starting left fielder Matt Waldren, broke the tie with a RBI single to center field. Later in the inning, the Coyotes performed a perfect double steal. Waldren scored as Tyler Brown got into a pickle between first and second base. CSN pitcher Alec Hutt finished the 7
th inning with a shut out, finishing the game with a final score of 5 to 3 in favor of the Coyotes.Â
Â
With the home win streak intact, the Coyotes were seeking a 4 game sweep over the Golden Eagles. Starting pitcher Anthony Martine allowed two hits and one run in the 1
st inning. Besides the 1
st inning, Martine didn't allow a runner on base the rest of the game. The CSN bats came to life this game combining for 9 total runs through 7 innings, behind Tyler Brown's 3 RBIs. The Coyotes finished the 4 game sweep of the Golden Eagles with a 9 to 1 victory.
Â
The Coyotes have been on fire lately, winning 14 of their last 16 games, with their 12 game home win streak still in play. The pitching staff continues to be the bright spot for the College of Southern Nevada. But with the bats producing as much as they have been lately, this team appears as if they are ready for their deep postseason run. The Coyotes travel to Salt Lake City, Utah looking to increase their win column against Salt Lake Community College Bruins in a 4 game series starting this upcoming Friday, March 13
th.
