CSN Softball Weekend Recap CSN vs CSI

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4
The Lady Coyotes traveled to Twin Falls this past weekend to face off with the CSI Golden Eagles, looking to keep pace in the SWAC.

By: James Hernandez

Megan Mello took the mound in game one looking to set the tone for the series. Mello pitched well enough to win allowing just two earned runs over six innings, striking out eight and walking one but two defensive errors in the sixth inning would doom the Lady Coyotes. CSN jumped out to a 3-1 lead after clean-up hitter Vanessa Sanders launched her team leading ninth home run, but unfortunately that would be their last run of the game. CSI would take the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth inning after left fielder Markii Ashton blasted a two-run home run over the left centerfield wall, as CSI would hold on to defeat CSN 5-3 in game one of the series.

Game two of the series was scoreless until the third inning when CSI would capitalize on a critical CSN error and strike for four runs. Golden Eagle first baseman Kayla Carter would add her third home run in two games and would be more than enough for CSI starting pitcher Kelsey Christensen. Christensen did not allow a run until Lady Coyote's catcher Rebekkah Gross took her yard in the top of the seventh inning. Unfortunately the late inning rally fell short for CSN and they dropped game two of the series 7-2.
Game three of the series was over before it began. CSI capitalized on three CSN errors in the bottom of the first inning to jump out to a 5-0 lead that they would not relinquish. Dacia Sykes and Sarina Creswell would provide RBI doubles in the third and the fifth inning to cut the Lady Coyotes deficit to 5-2. That was as close as CSN would get all day long as CSI delivered the knockout punch with another five run inning in the bottom of the fifth which would seal CSN's fate. CSI run ruled CSN 10-2 after 5 innings in game three of the series.

CSI scored runs in the first three innings to once again jump out to a commanding 5-0 lead in the final game of the series. The Lady Coyotes showed some resolve in the top of the fifth inning when they cut the deficit to 5-3, after designated hitter Dacia Sykes hit a two-run double to center field followed by a Sarina Creswell RBI triple. Golden Eagles starter Kelsey Christensen would settle in to earn her second complete game victory of the weekend as CSI held on to defeat CSN 7-3 and sweep the four game series.

CSN Softball will be back at home to face in-state rival Western Nevada for four games this weekend beginning with a doubleheader Friday afternoon at 1 and 3 followed by a second doubleheader Saturday at noon and 2.
