Box Score 4 The last time these two teams met both CSN and Salt Lake were ranked in the top five in the country. One month later Salt Lake sits atop the national poll and the Lady Coyotes have dropped out of the top 25 all together.By James HernandezGame one of the series saw the Lady Coyotes come out swinging as they steadily worked to build a 6-0 lead after just three innings of play. CSN plated single runs in the first and second inning courtesy of RBI singles by Amber Raab and Maggie Manwarren, but the top of the third inning is where the Lady Coyotes would pull away for good. The inning began with three straight hits and after Mia Acuna touched home courtesy of an error by SLCC pitcher Lauren Bailey ,the number one team in the country was in a six run hole. The Lady Bruins showed some resolve and cut the deficit to 6-3, but CSN outfielder Vanessa Sanders put the final nail in Salt Lake's coffin with a three-run blast that put her season total at 15, giving her team an 11-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Kristina Nelson pitched a clean bottom of the fifth inning to tie Megan Mello for the team lead in wins at 13, as CSN run ruled the number one team in the country by a final score of 11-3 in game one of the series.
Game two saw the Lady Coyotes in unfamiliar territory without ace Megan Mello for the first time this season as she was unable to make the trip to Salt Lake. Amber Raab took the mound for her first start of the season looking to give her team at a second consecutive victory over the nation's top team. That dream quickly became a nightmare when the Lady Bruins out up a seven spot in the bottom of the first inning, forcing Coach Cal to remove Raab after recording just two outs. Salt Lake would add another eight runs, scoring in three of the four innings they came to bat and mercifully the game was over after just five innings. SLCC run ruled CSN 15-1 in game two and evened the four game series at a game apiece.
The series continued Saturday afternoon and CSN's Kristina Nelson was hoping to do something no pitcher had accomplished all year, defeat Salt Lake twice in the same series. Unfortunately for Nelson and her Lady Coyotes, SLCC found themselves in a similar hitting groove to the one they had in game two and led 5-0 after just two innings. Raeana Gall and Corinne Cleverly both went deep in the bottom of the third inning ,added two more in the bottom of the fourth, to take a commanding 13-0 lead. The Lady Coyotes never stopped competing and scratched across their lone run of the game, when Maggie Manwarren crossed the plate courtesy of a wild pitch by Chelsa Baca. No team can survive a sixteen hit onslaught and the Lady Coyotes are no different, falling victim to the run rule for a second straight game and losing by a final score of 13-1 in game three.
With limited pitching options for the final game of the series Kristina Nelson was called upon to take the mound for the third time this series, as her Lady Coyotes looked to earn a road split with the top ranked Lady Bruins. Nelson pitched with the heart of a lion all game, holding SLCC to one run over the first four innings and giving her team a chance for the series split. CSN third baseman Sarina Creswell gave the Lady Coyote dugout a reason to believe in the top of the fourth inning when she smashed a solo shot over the wall and tied the game up 1-1. Nelson emptied the tank on Saturday and her ninth inning of work on the day proved to be one too many. Salt Lake played long ball in the bottom of the fifth inning when Chelsa Baca, Bailie Nelson and Riana Splinter flexed their muscle and used three home runs to end all hope for CSN by extending the lead to 7-1. Raeana Gall hit a walk off solo shot in the bottom of the sixth inning to give her Lady Bruins their third consecutive run rule victory of the series. SLCC defeated CSN 9-1 in game four.
The Lady Coyotes come home with revenge on their mind as they host second place conference rival CSI this weekend with doubleheader's Friday and Saturday afternoon.   Â
