Henderson, NV – Heading into the second evening of the Coyote Slugout,
Ben Cutting took the hill to try and collect another win over Prairie Baseball Academy of Alberta, Canada.
Cutting walked the first batter he faced who would then come around to score on a sacrifice-fly.
Despite allowing the early lead, Cutting would settle in and induce numerous groundball put-outs to hold the Dawgs at bay.
On a chilly evening, the Coyotes bats would stay cold until the third.
Christian Maggi lead off with a single and the hitting would be contagious.
Justin Lutes singled as well and then the designated hitter
Jason Wallace would get the third single in a row to plate Maggi and tie the game.
Two outs later,
Kaid Urban stepped into the box and found the gap through the left side to plate Wallace and give the Coyotes the first lead of the game.
Cutting would retire the side in the top of the fourth to give the bats back to the Coyotes.
Jordan Macias lead off with a single and
Dillon Johnson followed that up with a walk.
Lutes would then bring Macias home on an RBI ground-out.
Wallace would keep his reliable bat handy as he singled again to plate Johnson and extend the Coyote lead 4-1.
Cutting would once again shut down the Dawgs in the top of the fifth with two strikeouts and a ground-out.
Macias and Johnson would both get hit by pitches to get on in the bottom of the fifth before Lutes collected his 24
th base on balls of the season in 18 games.
A wild pitch would allow Macias to score from third and the Coyotes had a commanding lead before the bats got cold again through the next three innings.
Down but not out, the Dawgs from Alberta came to life in the eighth after
Dan Skelly came out of the pen to try and hold the Coyotes lead.
Skelly would find himself in a whole lot of trouble after allowing the first five batters he faced on base, plating three in the process.
Blake Inouye would be brought in to try to stop the Dawgs but a wild pitch would score the tying run.
The Coyotes could not collect the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth and Inouye would show no mercy in the top of the ninth.
He struck out the leadoff man, then induce a ground-out before slamming the door with a final strikeout to give the Coyotes a chance to walk-off in the bottom of the ninth.
Nicco Festa lead off the bottom and sent a ground ball through the left side before beating out the throw at first to represent the winning run.
Macias then sacrificed himself to move Festa to second.
With one out, Coach
Nick Garritano would call upon the utility man
Joey O'Brien to try and score the winning run from second.
With a full count pitch, O' Brien sent a shot up the box to a shallow center fielder.
Festa rounded third as the ball came in from the outfield. Festa slid in hard at home forcing the ball out of the catcher's grasp and winning it for the Coyotes.
O' Brien the utility man with only one appearance in the game walked it off and gave the Coyotes their seventh win in a row.
