Henderson, NV – During the second game of the double-header, the pitchers and catchers were the brightest of stars on the field.
Herbie Good took the hill for the Coyotes against the ace of the College of Southern Idaho Ryan Beard.
Good allowed one run in the top of the first but an excellent relay started by
Christian Maggi to
Dillon Johnson and then to
Jordan Macias halted all momentum for the Golden Eagles.
The Coyotes were facing one of the best in the conference as Beard dealt his best stuff every inning.
Only
Jason Wallace was able to get a hit off of him in the second but had no runs to show for it.
Beard had the potential to pitch well over 100 pitches but was pulled after 5.2 innings and only 2 hits allowed.
CSI collected another run in the sixth to and put even more pressure on the stagnant Coyotes.
Then in the bottom of the eighth with two outs, three consecutive singles from Maggi,
Jarrett Perns and
Justin Lutes would plate the first run for the Coyotes.
Alex Tisminezky shut down the Golden Eagles in the eighth and ninth to give the Coyotes a chance with just three precious outs left.
Dillon Johnson led off in the bottom of the ninth and smoked the very first pitch down the right field line for a triple.
Jay Martz then came to the plate and sent a ground ball to the right side, just far enough for Johnson to slide safely into home.
Coach Garritano then put the always reliable
Cody Milner in to execute the sacrifice bunt and move Martz to second.
The catcher
Nicco Festa then stepped into the box with a chance to compliment his outstanding defensive play with a clutch hit.
???????Festa sent a bloop shot down the line in shallow right but the Golden Eagles were unable to field it cleanly before Martz rounded third and touched home to give the Coyotes their 11
th conference win.
The Coyotes will play another double-header against the Golden Eagles tomorrow, April 1 at 1 p.m.
