HENDERSON, Nev. (April 17, 2019) – A strong weekend at home proved to be the best way to enjoy a beautiful weekend for the College of Southern Nevada softball team.
The Lady Coyotes went 3-1 against the Snow College Badgers, sweeping a Saturday doubleheader and earning a pair of walk-off wins throughout the weekend. The wins boosted CSN to just 1.5 games behind USU Eastern in the Scenic West Athletic Conference standings, setting up a potentially exciting end to the regular season.
In her weekly comments to csncoyotes.com, Southern Nevada coach
Ashley Johnston said the performance against Snow was a positive for her program.
"I'm just so proud of these ladies for never giving up throughout the series with Snow," she said. "To get two comeback wins late showed that this team has a lot of fight and you can never count them out. I believe it gives us a lot of confidence going into our next series."
In order to earn the 3-1 weekend record, the Coyotes had to come back late in games twice and had two walk-off victories. CSN also mixed quality pitching and timely offense to pick up the victory, scoring a combined 27 runs in the series and picking up two one-run victories.
Johnston said CSN's complete team effort helped them secure the victories.
"I believe the biggest part of our success came from our pitching staff," she said. "
Breanna Alvarez and
Karen Hernandez did an amazing job on the mound in keeping us in the game. Alvarez's changeup was very consistent and Hernandez had great spin on the ball that caused a lot of pop ups.
"
Bailey Pepper's bat was hot this weekend. The walk-off three-run home run gave us a lot of confidence that we could play with this team and come out on top this weekend."
The Coyotes will take their momentum on the road this weekend for a four-game series against Colorado Northwestern Community College, an excellent chance for CSN to extend their strong play. Southern Nevada previously went 2-2 against a CNCC team that is just 2-26 overall, providing the team with added motivation entering this weekend.
Southern Nevada will have a decided statistical advantage this weekend as it will be facing the league's last-place team in batting average (.273) and in team ERA (12.98). That combination should help CSN as the Coyotes have the fourth-highest batting average in the Scenic West Athletic Conference (.313).
This weekend's four-game series at Colorado Northwestern will start on Friday with a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. MDT. The two teams will also play a doubleheader on Saturday.
