NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The College of Southern Nevada women's basketball team mounted a strong fourth-quarter push, but Central Arizona College held on late to escape the Coyote Event Center with a 75–71 victory Saturday afternoon in ACCAC play.
CSN (13–7, 2–4 ACCAC) led after the opening quarter and trailed by just four points entering the final period, but could not overcome a decisive third-quarter surge by the Vaqueros (13–7, 3–2 ACCAC), who outscored the Coyotes 22–10 in that frame.
The Lady Coyotes came out sharp defensively, holding Central Arizona to just 11 first-quarter points while building an 18–11 advantage. CSN attacked the paint early and controlled the glass, setting the tone on both ends of the floor. Central Arizona responded in the second quarter, using efficient shooting to take a 35–33 halftime lead.
The third quarter proved pivotal. Central Arizona knocked down timely perimeter shots and capitalized on turnovers to open up a double-digit advantage, leading by as many as 12 points midway through the period. Despite the setback, CSN refused to fold.
A strong fourth-quarter effort saw the Coyotes pour in 26 points, trimming the deficit to two possessions in the final minute.
Trista Mabry sparked the rally with an aggressive scoring stretch inside, finishing with a team-high 16 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double.
Saroiya Ajomale added 11 points, while
Leah Mitchell contributed nine points and eight rebounds. Off the bench,
Jada Green provided a major boost with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
CSN shot 45.9 percent from the field for the game and dominated points in the paint (48), but Central Arizona's ability to get to the free-throw line and convert timely baskets down the stretch sealed the outcome.
Despite the loss, the Lady Coyotes showed resilience and balance as five players scored six or more points. CSN will look to bounce back on the road next week when it travels to Prescott, Ariz., to face Yavapai College on Saturday, January 31.
