Box Score 4 By James HernandezCSN Volleyball got its first taste of the road this past weekend as they traveled to Arizona as participants in the 2015 Scottsdale Volleyball Tournament to test its skill against Central Arizona, Scottsdale Community College, Eastern Arizona and Chandler-Gilbert Community College.
The tournament kicked off on Friday as the Coyotes (4-4) faced off against host Scottsdale Community College (7-1). The match was a competitive affair; however CSN could not get the timely breaks they needed. CSN dropped the match in straight sets to the Artichokes (21-25) Â (17-25) (25-27). Match leaders were Christina Beaver with 31 assists, Bailey Bergquist with 16 kills, and Courtney Cirella with 9 digs.
The second match of the weekend for CSN was versus the Central Arizona College Vaqueros. After dropping the first two sets of the match (20-25) (19-25) the Coyotes were able to rally and steal the third set (25-23). Fatigue finally set in during the 4
th set of the match as the Vaqueros were victorious (16-25) and defeated the Coyotes 3 sets to 1. The usual suspects led the Coyotes charge as Christina Beaver had a match high 27 assists, Courtney Cirella led the match with 15 digs and Larson, Stet, Bergquist and Alvarez-Thompson combined for 35 of the teams 39 total kills.
Match three of the tournament kicked off bright and early for CSN as they opened up play Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. versus the Eastern Arizona College Gila Monsters. The Coyotes put up a valiant fight, but dropped the match to the Gila Monsters in straight sets (17-25) (18-25) (22-25). Â Standouts for the match include Bailey Bergquist (8) Olivia Stet (6) and Jo-Hanna Alvarez-Thompson (6) combined for 20 of the teams 30 kills while Christina Beavers chipped in with 21 assists and once again Courtney Cirella led the team with 18 digs.
The final match of the weekend was between two different groups of Coyotes, one from Southern Nevada and the other from Chandler-Gilbert community College. CGCC struck first, winning the first set of the match (22-25). CSN would rally to win the second set and even up the match at one set apiece (25-20). With the match hanging in the balance our Coyotes rallied to win the sets three and four in extra time (26-24) and (31-29) to win the match 3 sets to 1, capturing its first victory of the tournament and bringing their overall record to 5-7. Christina  Beavers was once again all over the court with 41 assists and 4 kills, Bailey Bergquist, Olivia Stet and Jo Hanna Alvarez-Thompson combined for 45 of the teams 55 kills in the match. Courtney Cirella once again chipped in with a team high 23 digs.
CSN has one more warm-up before conference play begins as our Coyotes travel up to Victorville, CA September 19
th to take on Cuesta College at noon on Saturday followed by a second match that afternoon at 2:30 p.m. versus Mt. San Jacinto.
