Box Score Coyotes take down #6 Yavapai College in season openerĀ By James HernandezHenderson, NV -Ā The College of Southern Nevada's 2016 season began right where its 2015 season finished, albeit with a better result this time around for the host team. In a rematch of the 2015 Western District Championship game the 8th ranked CSN Coyotes were able to hold off the 6th ranked Yavapai College Roughriders in a game that had all the intensity of a late May clash.
Long beach State commit AJ Jones set the tone early for the Coyotes with four scoreless innings of work, and CSN newcomer
Ben Cutting earned his first collegiate victory by tossing three innings of one hit baseball.
Redshirt freshman
Blake Wiggins got the scoring started in the bottom of the third with a 2-run bomb over the right field wall that still hasn't landed. Wiggins was at it again in the bottom of the fifth inning with an RBI single that scored second baseman
Dillon Johnson and first baseman
Jose Verdugo followed up with an RBI single that scored Wiggins and expanded the Coyotes lead to 4-0.
Yavapai College would rally for two runs in the top of the eighth inning, but
Tyler Hallead would come in from the pen and keep the Roughriders from doing any further damage.
2015 SWAC reliever of the year Alec "Super" Hutt shut the door on Yavapai once and for all in the ninth, earning his first save of the season.
CSN will play Arizona Western tomorrow at 4:30 pm and finish day two of the Coyote Border battle against Texas powerhouse San Jacinto at 7:30.Ā
