Lady Coyote Soccer Weekend Recap Versus #20 Snow College

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
By James Hernandez

The season has been a roller coaster ride for Coach Schultz and her Lady Coyotes. After scoring 42 goals in the team's first eight games, the Coyotes were held scoreless last weekend in Salt Lake and came into this weekend without a goal scored in the team's last 180 minutes of play.

The schedule did not get any easier for the Lady Coyotes despite being back at home, as they welcomed in the 20th  ranked Snow College Badgers for a two match series last Friday and Saturday afternoon at Heritage Park.

After a draw and loss versus SLCC last weekend the Coyotes could ill-afford to lose any more ground to undefeated SWAC leader Snow College.

The Badgers wasted little time establishing themselves Friday afternoon as forward Sadie Munns scored her first of two goals just five minutes into the match.

Nicole Jenkins added a pair of goals in the 38th and the 67th minute to bury the Coyotes, in the opening match of the weekend 4-0. The loss dropped CSN under .500 in conference for the first time this season at 2-3-1, giving the rival Badgers a three game cushion in the standings.

The Lady Coyotes came out Saturday morning with a sense of urgency and the determination to not lose any more ground in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.

Despite being outshot 11-2 in the first half, the Lady Coyotes defense was able to limit Snow's scoring opportunities and take the match to halftime tied 0-0. The second half was a personal showcase for one of the best players in the conference, Carolina Velasquez. The three time SWAC keeper of the week's individual brilliance singlehandedly kept her team in the game. Velasquez turned away shot after shot on her way to a match high seventeen saves.

Unfortunately for the Lady Coyotes being outshot 36-5 proved to be too much. In the 80th minute of the match Badger forward Myka Bouwhuis finally broke the scoreless tie with a clutch goal that would be enough to get her team to the winner's circle.

Snow College defeated CSN 1-0 in the second match of the weekend, dropping the coyotes SWAC record to 2-4-1 and 7-4-1 overall.

Fans your Lady Coyotes will play a pair of road matches Thursday and Friday in Price, Utah versus the USU-Eastern Eagles, followed by a Saturday morning showdown in Craig, Colorado against the CNCC Spartans.
