Heading into this past weekend's matches the Lady Coyotes were just one win away from assuring themselves a winning campaign in 2016. In addition to securing a winning season, Coach Schultz's team was also hoping to gain some momentum heading into next weekend's conference tournament.
After honoring a super group of sophomore's on Thursday afternoon, the Lady Coyotes took to the pitch with the hopes of beating Salt Lake, for the first time this season.
The Bruin defense effectively shut down CSN's offensive attack a few weeks back, allowing just one goal in the team's two previous matchups, a win and a draw for SLCC at home in Taylorsville. Star sophomore
Nadia Hernandez got the Coyotes on the board first with a penalty kick goal at the 5:27 mark of the first half.
Kimberly Olivares followed with an unassisted goal just seven minutes later to put CSN up 2-0 early.
Salt Lake would fight back with a pair of goals that evened the match at 2 goals apiece after 45 minutes of play. The Bruins continued to make the most of its scoring opportunities when sophomore Kenzie Van Buren broke the matches 2-2 deadlock with a sweet unassisted shot that found the back of the net. SLCC was able to put three of the teams five shots on goal past CSN keeper
Carolina Velasquez and ultimately it was enough to secure the victory for the Bruins.
SLCC defeated CSN for the second time in three meetings this season, this time by a score of 3-2. The loss was CSN's sixth in its past seven matches, dropping its overall record to 8-7-1 overall and 3-7-1 in SWAC play.
Following a tough 3-2 setback at home the Lady Coyotes headed to Ephraim, Utah to battle the first place Snow College Badgers, who were yet to taste defeat in SWAC play.
The Badgers got the best of the Lady Coyotes a few weeks back, shutting them out in consecutive home matches 4-0 and 1-0 earlier this month.
Snow's stellar defense was once again front and center, contesting the Lady Coyotes at every turn and outshooting them 16-3 in the first half en route to a 1-0 halftime lead. CSN was able to double its shot output in the second half and keeper
Carolina Velasquez's individual brilliance kept the Coyotes within striking distance, however CSN was never able to score the equalizer and tie things up.
Snow defeated CSN 1-0 for its third victory of the season over the Lady Coyotes, outscoring them 6-0 and tallying 80 shots over the three matches this season.
The Coyotes will hit the road this week for the 2016 SWAC tournament in Ephraim, Utah beginning Thursday October 27
