The lady Coyotes went into Taylorsville, Utah boasting an impressive streak of 360 game minutes played without allowing a goal, as the team prepared for its first road conference matches of the season versus the Salt Lake Community College Bruins. During the teams five game winning streak CSN had outscored its opposition 33-2, including four consecutive shutouts from standout goalkeeper
Carolina Velasquez.
Friday's match began with the Bruins on the attack. Salt Lake registered nine of the first ten shots on goal to begin the match, however Velasquez was up to the challenge saving five of those shots and keeping the Bruins off of the scoreboard in the first half. Superb team defense by the Bruins limited the Coyotes to just three shots in the first half, none of which were able to find the back of the net. 45 grueling minutes later the Bruins and Coyotes had grinded to a 0-0 tie through 90 minutes of play. The fatigue was evident from both teams and despite playing a pair of overtime periods neither team was able to dent the scoreboard, resulting in a 0-0 draw to begin the weekend.
Both teams were back on the pitch Saturday afternoon, looking to solve the other's stellar defensive play and figure out a way to get itself on the scoreboard first.
For the second straight match both teams were able to limit its opponents scoring opportunities, through 165 minutes of play the lady Coyotes and lady Bruins once again found themselves deadlocked in a 0-0 tie heading into halftime.
The match remained that way until the 52
nd minute when Salt Lake's Rosa Cortez put a goal past Lady Coyote keeper
Carolina Velasquez for the first time in five matches. Sloppy play from CSN led to a PK opportunity for the Bruins Alejandra Meza and she cashed that opportunity in to give her team a 2-0 lead with less than 30 minutes remaining in the match. Nine minutes later Kayla Gonzalez would seal the deal for the Bruins, scoring the team's third goal in an eighteen minute span.
SLCC defeated CSN 3-0 on Saturday, snapping the Coyotes six match unbeaten streak, dropping them to 2-2-1 in SWAC play and 7-2-1 overall.
Fans your Lady Coyotes will be back in action at home this weekend with a pair of matches versus the Snow College Badgers Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.
