Lady Coyotes Weekend Soccer Recap

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

By James Hernandez

Following a successful 2-0 road trip to California, head coach Jennifer Schultz and her lady coyotes returned home for matches with conference foe USU-Eastern and non-conference opponent Grand Canyon University Club.

A festive atmosphere that included an appearance from city of Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen helped to usher in a new era of women's soccer here at the College of Southern Nevada.

Unfortunately for Coyote fans and players the visitors from Price, Utah did not share in the enthusiasm of the moment. The Eagles scored the  first goal when forward Alexi Barbosa put one past goalkeeper Carolina Velasquez and sent the Eagles to the locker room with a 1-0.

After regrouping at halftime the Coyotes came out on the attack and the result was a Carli Perkins equalizer just six minutes into the second half to knot the match up 1-1.

The Coyotes and Eagles would battle for twenty five minutes tied at a goal apiece, until a crucial penalty by CSN resulted in a penalty kick for USU-Eastern.

Bella Sorensen cashed in on the penalty kick to put her team up 2-1 with under 14 minutes to play in the match. Three short minutes later Rachel Neff scored to seal the deal for the Eagles and hand CSN its first loss of the season by a final of 3-1.

With their next game less than 48 hours away the Lady Coyotes had to turn the page on the  first loss of the season quickly and refocus on its next opponent, the Grand Canyon University Club Antelopes.

The Antelopes came out charging and Diana Douglas netted the first goal just ten minutes into the match, putting the coyotes into an early 1-0 hole.

CSN's offense needed a spark and sophomore forward Kimberly Olivares was more than happy to provide it.

The former Cerritos College Falcon put a pair of goals on the board fifteen minutes apart on her way to a hat trick that nabbed her SWAC player of the week honors.

Local Green Valley high school product Katherine Lazarte and sophomore forward Nadia Hernandez chipped in a goal each as the Lady Coyotes raced past the Antelopes 5-2.

The Lady Coyotes improved to 3-1 on the season and will be in action Thursday 9/15 and Saturday 9/17.
