Following a pair of 10-0 conference victories in Rangely, Colorado the Lady Coyotes returned home looking to extend the team's three game winning streak and continue its ascent towards the top of the SWAC standings as they hosted second place SLCC for a pair of matches Friday and Saturday afternoon.
The Bruins came into the match sharp as a tack and were able to find the back of the net just 4:52 into the match to take the early 1-0 lead. A shell-shocked group of Lady Coyotes would proceed to surrender 3 more goals in the next 11 minutes of play going into intermission facing a 6-0 deficit, the team's largest of the season. Despite an improved defensive effort in the second half from CSN, a sustained second half offensive attack from SLCC netted the team four second half goals. Unfortunately Southern Nevada was held scoreless for just the second time in 2017 and suffered its worst setback of the season as Salt Lake cruised to a 10-0 statement win to hand the Lady Coyotes their second conference loss.
With its worst loss of 2017 in the rearview mirror a re-energized Southern Nevada team took the pitch Saturday looking to make amends for Friday's drubbing and even the score with Salt Lake.
The first half was a defensive showcase by both teams, and despite being outshot 10-1 by the Bruins in the opening 45 minutes all-SWAC keeper
Carolina Velasquez turned away every shot she faced to send the game into halftime 0-0. Both clubs entered the second 45 minutes of play in search of a consistent offensive rhythm and it was SLCC who eventually broke through with the game's first goal at the 54:32 mark. Velasquez continued to keep her team in the match with a season-high 17 saves, however with only three total shots on goal in 90 minutes the CSN offense was unable to generate any scoring opportunities. SLCC added a pair of goals late to defeat CSN 3-0 and sweep the weekend series versus their rivals from the Silver state.
