CSN Baseball left the comforts of the "den" for the first time this season to battle the Colorado Northwestern Community College Spartans in the teams Scenic West Athletic Conference opener.
The two-time reigning and defending SWAC regular season champions were eager to take its first steps towards a three-peat as well as securing home field advantage for this year's Region 18 tournament.
Team wins leader (4)
Todd Danzeisen took the ball for the Coyotes as they looked to extend its season best winning streak to ten games. Todd was masterful over his five shutout innings of work, allowing just three hits and striking out three Spartans on the way to his fifth victory of the season.
CSN plated at least one run in six of the team's seven plate appearances, eventually building an 8-0 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. Six Coyotes had at least one RBI in the game, highlighted by a
Justin Lutes solo shot in the third inning.
Kaid Urban and
Jordan Macias combined for three RBI's while
Dillon Johnson,
Christian Maggi,
Michael Camburn and
Zach Ramzy chipped in with one RBI apiece.
CSN extended its winning streak to ten games with a convincing 8-1 victory over CNCC in the team's conference opener. The win improved CSN to 1-0 in SWAC play and 14-7 overall.
CSN entered the second game of the weekend with its sights set on increasing the winning streak to eleven games and freshman
Herbie Good responded with arguably his best performance of the season.
Herbie tossed 6.1 stellar innings of one run baseball, retiring 19 of the final 21 batters he faced after allowing a solo home run to the first hitter of the game.
Jarrett Perns knotted the game up 1-1 in the top of the seventh after his clutch single plated catcher Nico Festa. The game remained tied for the next seven innings thanks in large part to some clutch pitching from the CSN bullpen. Sophomore's
Blake Inouye and
Timmy Burtzloff combined to pitch seven innings, allowing just a two hits and striking out nine Spartans.
Unfortunately for the Coyotes the Spartans were able to push across the game-winning run in the bottom of the fourteenth inning, outlasting CSN 2-1 in a marathon contest that spanned two days.
Despite having its ten game winning streak snapped, CSN was confident it could begin a new streak in game three of the series with talented lefty
Ben Cutting toeing the rubber.
Cutting struggled to locate his secondary pitches for strikes all afternoon, and despite striking out six batters the lefty surrendered five walks and four runs scored over his 3.1 innings of work.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the third shortstop
Jay Martz singled home
Jordan Macias to cut the Coyotes deficit to 3-1.
That clutch piece of hitting from Martz sparked a three inning bottom of the fourth inning that was highlighted by freshman
Peyton Koopman's two-run blast to give CSN its first lead of the day, 4-3. With the game tied up 4-4, a pair of costly errors by CNCC allowed CSN to score three unearned runs and take a 7-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Former Bishop Gorman grad
Alex Tisminezky helped secure the victory for his Coyotes by tossing 3.2 innings of one-hit relief to earn his first career victory in a Coyote uniform.
CSN defeated CNCC 7-4 in game three of the weekend, improving to 2-1 in SWAC play and 15-8 overall.
True freshman
Isaiah Blaylock took the ball in the final game of the series looking to continue his recent domination on the mound. Over his last three starts the former Shadow Ridge HS standout has pitched 12 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and fanning 12 batters.
Blaylock was dialed in from the start, allowing just a one run over six outstanding innings of work, striking out eight Spartans and improving his record to 3-1 on the season.
Offensively CSN plated the first five runs of the game and freshman
Peyton Koopman remained red hot as he launched his second long ball of the day to lead off the top of the fourth inning.
Cody Milner,
Christian Maggi,
Jarrett Perns and
Jay Martz finished the game with one RBI apiece as the Coyotes plated six total runs in the final game of the weekend.
Swiss army knife
Joey O'Brien pitched a scoreless seventh inning to secure a three game to one series victory for the Coyotes.
CSN defeated CNCC 6-1 in the final game of the weekend. With the victory CSN claimed its 13th victory in the team's last 14 games, improving to 3-1 in SWAC play and 16-8 overall.
