CSN headed into its first conference series of the season riding a four -game winning streak that saw the team plate 49 runs and 59 hits versus the College of the Desert. The Lady Coyotes headed to Ephraim, Utah looking to make a statement versus a Badgers team that finished last season third in the conference (29-21 overall, 23-17 SWAC) behind nationally ranked SLCC and CSI.
Deja Rogers brought a ten- inning scoreless streak into game one of the weekend for CSN and was staked to an early 2-0 lead thanks to a pair of runs in the top of the first inning.
Jinger Meuir scored the first run on a Snow College fielding error off of the bat of
Chandie Perez, who came around to score one batter later courtesy of a
Mackenzie McBride double to left centerfield. Perez scored her second run of the game in the top of the third inning when she launched her first round tripper of the season to center, tallying her team leading 16th RBI of the season.
Rogers pitched a strong game until her location deserted her in the bottom of the fifth inning. Following a leadoff walk to Bailey Vigil, McCall Stoddard deposited a ball over the left field to bring Snow even with CSN at 3-3. Deja walked the next two Badgers and a walk and a hit later the Lady Coyotes found themselves staring a 5-3 deficit in the face.
CSN was unable to rally back in the final two frames of the game, dropping its SWAC opener 6-3 to Snow College and falling to 5-5 overall.
Sophomore
Shonda Badayos took the ball in game two of the weekend looking for her team leading fourth victory of the season.
Mackenzie McBride singled home
Kara Simpson in the top of the first inning to put CSN on the scoreboard first for the second straight game. Badayos pitched around a leadoff double in the second, striking out three batters and keeping the Badgers off the scoreboard heading into the top of the fourth. With two runners on base and two out, the Lady Coyotes rallied for five straight hits to take control of the game.
Alexa Campbell got it going with a two out RBI single, followed by a
Kara Simpson two-RBI triple, and concluding with back to back RBI hits from
Mackenzie McBride and
Kiana Burnett.
After the dust settled in a six -run top of the fourth inning, Shonda cruised to a complete game victory, allowing just one run and striking out five Badgers over her seven innings of work.
CSN defeated Snow College 6-1 in game two of the weekend, improving to 6-5 on the year.
CSN sent Deja Rogers to the circle in a rematch of game one versus the Badgers ace Carley Guymon with both teams eyeing its second victory of the weekend.
After firing an eight strikeout complete game victory in game one, Guymon had her sights set on her second win of the series.
Snow College blitzed the Lady Coyotes early, plating seven runs in the first three innings of the game.
Alexa Campbell and
Jordan Menke were the only CSN players to get a hit off Carley Guymon, who was filthy in her five shutout innings of work to improve to 5-2 on the season.
Snow College defeated CSN 8-0 in game three of the weekend, dropping the Lady Coyotes to 6-6 overall.
If
Shonda Badayos could earn the victory in the final game of the weekend, she would improve to 5-0 on the season, just one win shy of her season total during the 2016 season.
Both teams traded runs in the first three frames of action, tied up 3-3 heading into the top of the fourth inning.
Kara Simpson broke the tie in the top of the inning with a bases clearing 3 RBI double to give CSN its first lead of the day 6-3. A bases loaded walk by
Jessica Garcia followed by a 2 RBI double by
Jinger Meuir led to an eight run outburst, giving the Lady Coyotes an 11-3 lead.
The Badgers rallied for eight runs in the fourth and fifth inning to trim CSN's lead to 12-11 and set up a nail-biting finish to the opening weekend of SWAC play.
