This week on "Can you dig it" Coach Vergnaud and I recap CSN's home match versus Snow College and preview the Lady Coyotes upcoming matches this weekend versus the Bruins and Golden Eagles.
James: With four matches left in the regular season, what areas of the team would you like to see improved before postseason play begins?
Coach Vergnaud: We need to continue to stay mentally focused in practice and work hard on the little intangibles.
James: Did the team suffer any injuries or setbacks this past weekend?
Coach Vergnaud: We have had a few minor injuries, as well as, some are still battling the sick bug. However, we should be in a good shape for a competitive weekend.
James: Can you provide our readers with a brief scouting report of this weekend's upcoming opponents, Salt Lake CC and College of Southern Idaho?
Coach Vergnaud: Both teams will bring a balanced attack to the match. CSI and SLCC are currently the top teams in hitting efficiency and average digs per set in the Scenic West Athletic Conference. We did not play our best against them in the first round, however, I have made some adjustments and I am confident we will have a more competitive showing this weekend.
James: Give us a player or two you and your coaching staff feel has shown the most improvement from the start of the season up to now.
Coach Vergnaud:
- Sophomore- Libero: Jacquie Yapching: She has doubled her statistics from 2017 in total serving aces, serving aces per set, and has tripled her stat in total digs from 2017.
- Sophomore- Setter: Kaylee Wilcox: Kaylee is running a better offense as we are heading into the final weeks of regular season. She has nearly doubled in stats from 2017 for assists per set, as well as, has worked very hard on improving her defense. She is currently 2nd on the team for total digs and average digs per set.
- Freshmen-Outside/Right-side Hitter: Abbey Archambault: Abbey has worked hard over the last few months both on her mental and physical game. She is coming off a two consistent weeks against conference opponents. Watching players grow and get better at their craft is exciting and I am looking forward to what Abbey will bring both in practice and on game days as we head into the final weeks of regular season.
James: The team has competed favorably with the top teams in the SWAC this season. What will it take to finish the fight and pull the upset this weekend versus either the Bruins or Golden Eagles?
Coach Vergnaud: We will need to execute and be better offensively earlier in the match. I thought we were very patient and composed against Snow, which we will need to carry that mentality into both matches this weekend. We have competed with the best of the best, however, we need to execute and finish when we have the opportunities.
Thank you for your time this week Coach and best of luck this weekend.
