On The Pitch | Week 8 With Coach Hawkins

| By:

By James Hernandez

This week "On the Pitch" Coach Hawkins and I recap the Lady Coyotes home matches this past weekend versus Salt Lake and preview the team's regular season finale against the Snow College Badgers.

James: With a victory this past week over Utah State University Eastern the team guaranteed itself a non-losing regular season. What has pleased you most about coaching the Women's soccer program this season?

Coach Hawkins: The best thing about this team is their desire improve every day.  They constantly bring positive energy and focus on the task at hand.  In addition, they genuinely get along and have a great time together.    Coaching this team has been one of my most rewarding experiences of my career.

James: Did the team suffer any injuries or setbacks this past weekend?

Coach Hawkins: We had a couple knocks consistent with playing two hard games, but nothing that will keep anyone out for long.  We have been fortunate in that regard.

James: Can you provide our readers with a brief scouting report of this weekend's opponent, the Snow College Badgers?

Coach Hawkins: Snow is #7 in the nation for a reason.  They are athletic and technically sound at every position.  They have a very good coach who runs a great program.  Snow brings in the best forwards of the conference and we must shut down them down.  I expect them to play very direct on the attack.  Defensively, the height will pose a challenge for us on all battles in the air.

James: What areas of the team would you like to see improve as postseason play approaches?

Coach Hawkins: We need to play 90 minutes of focused soccer.  I have said this over and over again throughout the season.  We must eliminate or own mistakes before we can beat the best teams in the nation.

James: Give us a player or two that you feel have a chance to play a big role for the team in the upcoming Region XVIII tournament.

Coach Hawkins: I think Dona Acierto has been improving a lot these past few weeks.  If she continues to progress, I think she could be the surprise player of the tournament for us.  Also, Samantha Silva has had a solid season for us, but I think her best game is yet to come.

Thank you for your time this week Coach, best of luck and safe travels this weekend.
