2018 Men's Soccer Region XVIII Tournament Preview

By James Hernandez

The Scenic West Conference invades the Beehive State October 26th and 27th for some high-level junior college soccer in the 2018 Region XVIII tournament. A wealth of stars will be on display from one of the most talented soccer conferences in the entire NJCAA. One team will emerge victorious from this single elimination tournament and continue its quest for postseason glory in the 2018 Western District Tournament November 2nd and 3rd.

(4) USU-Eastern Eagles 8-8 overall, 4-8 SWAC

Players to watch: Frank Debry (12* goals, 3 assist, 27* points) Jojea Kwizera (2 goals, 4* assists, 8 points) Mat Clark (3 goals, 2 assists, 8 points) Israel Davila Aleman (19 GA, 1.77 GAA, .672 save percentage, 39 saves)

USU-Eastern can win the 2018 Region 18 tournament if… The Eagles figure out a way to best fellow in-state rivals Snow College and Salt Lake. Eastern was a combined 0-6 versus the other two Utah schools in the SWAC and will need to pull the upset Friday afternoon over the host Bruins in order to keep its title chances alive.

#17 (2) Snow College Badgers 14-3-2 overall, 8-3-1 SWAC

Players to watch: Harei Maeda (7* goals, 4* assists, 18* points) James Pena (6 goals, 1 assists, 13 points) Sam Melo (7* goals, 2 assists, 16 points) Mitchel Pyle (7* goals, 4 assists, 18* points)

Snow College can win the 2018 Region 18 tournament if… The Badgers can survive and advance in its opening tournament match versus Southern Nevada. The Badgers and Coyotes have developed quite the rivalry the past few seasons and this will just add another chapter to this blood feud between the two schools.

#14 (1) Salt Lake City Bruins 14-2-1 overall, 9-2-1 SWAC

Players to watch: Enoch Mushagalusa (26* goals, 3 assists, 55* points) Innocent Twishime (10 goals, 6 assists, 26 points) Jonathan Guadarrama (7 goals, 8* assists, 22 points) Isaac Roy (10 GA, 0.69 GAA, .744 save percentage, 29 saves)

Salt Lake can win the 2018 Region 18 tournament if… The Bruins continue to take care of business at home. Salt Lake has yet to taste defeat on its home field, and with arguably the deepest collection of talent in the SWAC this season's Region 18 tournament is theirs to lose.

(3) College of Southern Nevada Coyotes 11-5-1 overall, 8-4 SWAC

Players to watch: Manuel Ponce (7 goals, 4 assists, 18* points) Maliq Cooper (10* goals, 2 assists, 22* points) Marcos Delangel-Parra (3 goals, 3 assists, 9 points) Jesus Gonzalez (1 goal, 7* assists, 9 points)

Southern Nevada can win the 2018 Region 18 tournament if… The dynamic duo of Manuel Ponce and Maliq Cooper can ignite the Coyotes offense. CSN will need to become road warriors this weekend if they want to exercise the demons of last season's heartbreaking Region XVIII title game defeat and continue its march towards its second Nationals berth in the last three seasons.
