With the conference schedule in full swing, the College of Southern Nevada looked to capture its first SWAC victory of the 2018 season. In order to make that goal a reality the Lady Coyotes would need to produce a strong effort on both sides of the ball versus a pair of conference foes.
Utah State University-Eastern invaded the "Den" Thursday evening looking to outplay Southern Nevada on its home court and establish itself as a contender in a tough Scenic West Athletic Conference.
The Eagles jumped on the Coyotes early in the opening set, establishing a presence at the front of the net on its way to a convincing (16-25) opening set victory. Set two was a bit more competitive, however Southern Nevada was unable to breakthrough and dropped set two of the match (19-25), leaving themselves no margin for error. Despite some in-match adjustments from Coach Vergnaud and his staff, the Lady Coyotes were defeated in set three, dropping the match (16-25, 19-25 and 20-25) in straight sets to fall to 0-4 in SWAC play and 7-13 overall. Match standouts for Southern Nevada included
Lexi Riggs with a team high in kills (13) and digs (5) as well as
Kaylee Wilcox with 16 assists.
A pair of winless Scenic West Athletic Conference members took the court Saturday morning looking to reverse their fortune and establish some momentum as the stretch run quickly approached for both teams.
Colorado Northwestern came out of the locker room hot, and carried that momentum to an impressive (21-25) opening set win.
Southern Nevada regrouped in set two, taking it (25-18) and knotting the match up at 1 set apiece. The Lady Coyotes asserted themselves in set three, dominating the Spartans on the way to an impressive (25-11) set three victory. CNCC battled in set 4, however CSN's play around the net proved to be too much for the Spartans to handle. CSN defeated CNCC (21-25, 25-18, 25-11 and 25-17) to capture the team's and Coach Vergnaud's first conference victories of 2018.
Rachel Chambers (10 kills),
Kaylee Wilcox (32 assists) and
Jacquie Yapching (17 digs) paced the Lady Coyotes in the victory.
Fans your Lady Coyotes will host the Snow College Badgers Saturday September 13
