A hungry pack of Coyotes traveled to Phoenix, Arizona to clash with the Gateway Community College Geckos on Friday followed a battle versus the Paradise Valley Community College Pumas on Saturday as they looked to establish themselves versus a pair of perennial contenders from the Grand Canyon State.
The 2019 season began for the Coyotes with a Friday afternoon matchup versus the Gateway Community College Geckos.
Southern Nevada was on the attack early and that offensive pressure paid dividends just eight minutes into the match when
Alfredo Diaz converted a sweet feed from
Jesus Ubario into the first CSN goal of 2019.
Jesus Ubario was not done impacting the match by a long shot, the freshman from Mojave High School found the back of the Geckos net in the 19th minute courtesy of an assist off the boot of
Logan Bodnar to expand the Coyotes lead to 2-0 heading into halftime. A suffocating defensive effort from Southern Nevada in the second half extinguished any hopes of a second half comeback from the Geckos.
That effort yielded the knockout blow in the 72nd minute when
Benjamin Stang converted a pass from
Bryan Montoya into a goal, that extended CSN's lead to 3-0.
Sebastian St. Jules was untested in the net courtesy of a great defensive effort by Southern Nevada in a 3-0 shutout versus Gateway CC 3-0 to improve to 1-0 in 2019.
After claiming a shutout victory over the Geckos, Southern Nevada set its sights on a clean sweep of the weekend when they invaded PVCC stadium to battle the Pumas on their home pitch.
The Coyotes were on the board early for a second straight match after
Alfredo Diaz beat the Pumas keeper just 15 minutes into the match to give his team a 1-0 lead.
Diego Gonzalez doubled the Coyotes lead at the 20:00 minute mark of the first half courtesy of Lagan Bodnar's second assist of the match.
Benjamin Stang erupted for his second and third goals of the weekend at the 28:00 and 37:00 minute mark of the opening half to give CSN a commanding 4-0 advantage heading into intermission. Freshman and former Durango High School standout Mihreteab "Tyson" Tesfamariam made his presence known with a monster second half that included a pair of goals and his second assist of the match, giving him a game-high four points and in the process expanding the Coyotes lead to 6-0.
Philip Obradovic netted the teams seventh goal of the match as the Coyotes rolled the Pumas 7-0.
Freshman keeper
Ivan Rodriguez stopped seven shots to extend the Coyotes scoreless streak to 180 minutes in 2019.
