CSN Volleyball Weekend Recap vs USU-E and CNCC 10-16-2015

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
By James Hernandez

CSN concluded its home schedule this weekend versus Utah State University-Eastern and Colorado Northwestern Community College. This match up was highlighted by the school's first ever "Coyote Blue Out" night Thursday evening versus the Golden Eagles followed by a very intense four set battle with the Spartans.

Thursday evening was a very festive occasion at the "coyote den" as CSN volleyball supporters packed the Sports Center for the inaugural "Blue Out", in which the first 300 fans through the door received a souvenir T-shirt. The fans were out in full force to support their team and the lady Coyotes fed off the energy, of the crowd early on as they battled point for point with the Golden Eagles in the opening set of the match before falling (21-25).

The second set of the match began with promise for CSN as they were within two points, trailing 8-10 until USU-Eastern pulled ahead comfortably after scoring 8 of the sets next ten points on its way to a (17-25) victory in the 2nd set.

During the third set of the match CSN did everything within its power to extend the match to a fourth set, but unfortunately fell short as they dropped the match in straight sets (21-25) (17-25) (21-25). Match standouts for the Coyotes included Bailey Bergquist and Johanna Alvarez-Thompson, who tied for the team high in kills with 9 apiece and the ultra consistent Christina Beaver who chipped in with 29 assists.

The final home game of the Coyotes 2015 season took place Saturday afternoon as the CNCC Spartans came to town to face off with CSN for the second time this season. The first meeting between these two teams was a very evenly matched contest earlier this season in Rangely, Colorado where the Coyotes played three very competitive sets before dropping the match in straight sets.

The second match began in the same competitive fashion and even included a little history for the CSN Volleyball program. With a hard earned (25-23) opening set victory the Lady Coyotes volleyball team won its first SWAC set in program history. After the opening set loss, the Spartans would find a way to rally for a (18-25) victory in the second set and knot the match up at one set each.

The third set of the match was an epic test of endurance for both teams that ended in heartbreaking fashion for CSN as they eventually fell (26-28) despite holding a late 27-26 advantage.

Set four was over before it began as a mentally and physically exhausted Coyote team was no match for a Spartan team, that was playing with a renewed sense of enthusiasm after pulling out hard fought victories in the previous two sets. CNCC defeated CSN three sets to one, (25-23) (18-25) (26-28) and (12-25). Johanna Alvarez-Thompson led the team in kills (15) and aces (3) while Hannah Karas contributed 17 digs and Christina Beaver came through with a team high 34 assists.

The Lady Coyotes will hit the road this weekend as they take on the first place CSI Golden Eagles in Twin Falls Idaho Friday night, October 23 at 7:00 p.m., followed by an afternoon matchup Saturday October 24 at 1:00 p.m. in Salt Lake City Utah versus the SLCC Bruins.
