The lady coyotes closed out the 2017 regular season at home this past weekend by paying homage to a special group of sophomore's versus West Coast Baptist College Thursday night followed by "fan appreciation day" Saturday afternoon against conference foe Snow College.
The youngest roster in the Scenic West Athletic Conference had its fair share of growing pains this season, however Thursday night the group put all that behind them as they prepared to say goodbye to 3 departing sophomores.
Kathy Hernandez,
Esmeralda Solano and
Jaycie Johnson were honored before the match versus West Coast Baptist College, however it was the teams play on the court that truly sent these three upperclassmen out in style.
The Lady Coyotes pounced on the Eagles early, taking the opening set 25-11 and setting the tone for the remainder of the match. Set two saw the team expand on what was working as they outworked WCBC en route to a 25-14 win that had the team just one set victory away from its first match victory in over a month. CSN sealed the deal with a quality third set of play that gave the team the victory in straight sets (25-11, 25-14 and 25-17) as they looked to establish some much-needed momentum heading into next week's Region XVIII tournament.
Following the teams straight sets victory on "sophomore day" the team set its sights on a conference victory of 2017 versus the Badgers.
Snow College established control of the match from the opening whistle, outplaying the Coyotes in all facets of the match to claim the opening set (14-25). Set two was extremely competitive until Snow used a strong run to separate themselves and eventually take a two sets to zero edge with a (15-25) victory. The third set saw the Badgers control play around the net and behind the service line as the team cruised to a straight sets victory (14-25, 15-25 and 14-25) to keep Southern Nevada winless in SWAC play for the second time in three seasons.
Match standouts for the Coyotes included
Jaycie Johnson (8 kills) and Carlee Becker (10 assists, 10 digs).
Fans your Lady Coyotes will be in action next week as they participate in the 2017 Region XVIII tournament.
