After taking care of business in Rangely, Colorado with a sweep of the Spartans just over a week ago, Southern Nevada set its sights on a weekend showdown with SLCC, as well as keeping pace with undefeated Snow College in an extremely competitive Scenic West Athletic Conference.
Friday's match opened up with the physicality and competitiveness we have grown accustomed to seeing from both sides. The intensity continued to rise as the match remained scoreless until the Bruins Alexis Jaimes found the back of the net on a penalty kick at the 28 minute mark of the first half. Salt Lake was able to maintain the lead throughout the first half and took a 1-0 lead into halftime. CSN was on the attack to begin the second half and the offensive persistence paid dividends when Momodou "Mo" Kinteh scored the equalizer on a beautiful header assisted by
Marcos DelAngel-Parra to even the match up 1-1. Former Durango Trail Blazer
Oscar Rodriguez gave Southern Nevada its first lead of the match at the 67:56 mark of the second half when he beat Bruins keeper Tyler Dean to make it 2-1 Coyotes. Another former Durango high school standout
Marcos DelAngel-Parra found his second point of the match and first goal at the 75 minute mark to give CSN a 3-1 stranglehold on the match.
Juan Rodriguez converted a perfect pass of the foot of
Manny Jahuey to bury the Bruins for good, extending the Coyotes lead to three goals with two minutes to play in the match. CSN defeated SLCC for the first time in program history 4-1 Friday afternoon to remain unbeaten in conference play.
Following an impressive 4-1 victory the Coyotes set their sights on extending its winning streak to a season high five matches and down the Bruins for a second consecutive match. Every inch of ground was contested in a defensive showcase that saw both teams neutralized and held off the scoreboard despite CSN outshooting SLCC 9-4. The second half provided an even stingier defensive effort by both clubs as each side was only able to register one shot on goal apiece. Goalkeepers Tyler Dean and
Miguel Navarrete lived up to their reputations as two of the best keepers in junior college as the Coyotes and Bruins were held scoreless for 90 minutes. Neither Southern Nevada nor Salt Lake were able to generate any scoring opportunities in the first overtime and the match remained scoreless after 100 minutes of high-level collegiate soccer. With both teams physically and mentally fatigued to begin the second overtime it was the Bruins who converted in the 104
th minute to score the game winning goal. SLCC defeated CSN 1-0 in overtime to escape with a weekend split.
