By James Hernandez

For a second consecutive weekend the Lady Coyotes were on the road to test themselves versus some of the top junior college volleyball teams in the Grand Canyon State.

CSN opened up play Friday morning versus Mesa Community College. Both teams got after it in the opening match of the weekend, exchanging leads all match in a back and forth affair. Unfortunately for the College of Southern Nevada, the Thunderbirds were able to earn the victory in straight sets (23-25, 20-25, and 19-25) to keep the Lady Coyotes winless. Match standouts for CSN included Jaycie Johnson (9 kills) Emily Ragsdale (6 Blocks) Logan DeLong (14 assists) and Esmeralda Solano (12 digs).

Match two of Friday afternoon pitted the College of Southern Nevada against South Mountain Community College in a rematch from the previous weekend in Prescott, AZ. The Cougars claimed the opening set of the match (25-18), but the Lady Coyotes were able to close the gap in sets two and three. SMCC gutted out a tough second set (25-27) and put the finishing touches on a straight set victory by edging out CSN (23-25) in the third and final set. The usual suspects Jaycie Johnson (8 kills) Emily Ragsdale (4 blocks) Logan DeLong (16 assists) and Esmeralda Solano (21 digs) did the heavy lifting for the Lady Coyotes in the second match of the weekend.

Another familiar foe awaited the Lady Coyotes Saturday morning as Eastern Arizona College looked to make it two match victories in consecutive weekends over CSN. The Gila Monsters were pushed to the limit by the College of Southern Nevada in the opening set of the match, escaping with a (23-25) win. A fatigued CSN team dropped the second set of the match (9-25) and bowed out (19-25) to drop the match in straight sets. Kathy Hernandez (6 kills) Lexi Riggs (3 aces) Logan DeLong (13 assists) and Esmeralda Solano (11 digs) paced the Coyotes in the teams rematch with EAC.

The Scottsdale Community College Fighting Artichokes were the final opponent facing the Lady Coyotes in a weekend full of close calls and competitive matches. SCC came out swinging from the opening serve, stunning CSN (11-25) to take the opening set. Despite competing admirably in sets two and three, the Fighting Artichokes were just too much for the College of Southern Nevada to handle. Scottsdale CC completed the straight sets victory with by a score of (17-25 and 15-25). Kathy Hernandez led the team in kills (5) and digs (7) while Logan DeLong paced CSN with a match high 14 assists.
