Following a tough opening weekend of play that resulted in a tie to Sheridan College and a loss to Otero Junior College, the Lady Coyotes were back in action at home versus the USU-Eastern Eagles. Coach
Rob Dahl got his first taste of SWAC conference action versus an Eagles team that came into the season looking to improve upon a fourth place finish in 2016.
Friday's match opened up with both teams playing stellar defense as the match remained scoreless until the 34
th minute when the Eagles Sylvie Call put one past reigning SWAC keeper of the year
Carolina Velasquez. CSN was able to limit the damage and headed into halftime trailing only 1-0 after being outshot 14-2 in the first half. The Lady Coyotes struck for the equalizer in the 52
nd minute off the foot of
Shae Hollan. USU-E was able to regain the lead in the when Kallie Magby broke away for an unassisted goal in the 64
th minute, giving the Eagles a 2-1 advantage. With their backs against the wall Southern Nevada was able to rally and tie the match just three minutes later when former Cimarron Memorial standout
Jazmin Centeno found
Ashlee Jordan on a perfect pass that knotted the contest up 2-2. Both teams had their chances down the stretch and in overtime, however neither the Coyotes nor Eagles were able to breakthrough with another goal. CSN and USU-Eastern battled to a 2-2 tie in the SWAC opener for both teams.
The start of Saturday's match was delayed, but when the action finally got underway the intensity between these two rivals picked up right where it left off. The Eagles blitzed CSN early, scoring three goals in the first 25 minutes of play to take a commanding 3-0 lead into intermission despite being outshot 8-7.
Ashlee Jordan found the back of the net for the second consecutive game in the 67
th minute to get Southern Nevada on the scoreboard and cut the deficit to 3-1. With time running out in the match
Sydni Aldan converted a perfect pass from
Ashlee Jordan into the Lady Coyotes second goal of the match in the 87
th minute, cutting the Eagles lead to 3-2. Unfortunately the valiant 2
nd half rally fell short as the Eagles were able to hold on for a hard fought 3-2 victory.
Fans your Lady Coyotes will be away from the den this weekend as they travel to the Golden state to face Mt. San Antonio College on Saturday and Victor Valley College on Sunday.
