The College of Southern Nevada prepared for its final non-conference test of the season last Thursday versus West Coast Baptist College before they opened up Scenic West Athletic Conference play in Ephraim, Utah versus the NJCAA's fourth ranked Snow College Badgers.
CSN welcomed WCBC into the "Den" looking to claim its seventh match victory of the 2018 season.
The Lady Coyotes pounced on the Eagles from the opening whistle, dispatching them 25-9 and making a statement in the process. Set two was much of the same as Southern Nevada got out to an early advantage and set down WCBC 25-11, taking a 2 sets to zero stranglehold on the match. Without much size around the net it was an uphill struggle for the Eagles, and they eventually bowed out 25-12 in set three, dropping the match in straight sets (25-9, 25-11, and 25-12) to an efficient group of Lady Coyotes. Match standouts for Southern Nevada included
Lexi Riggs (8 kills),
Kaylee Wilcox (14 assists) and
Illiana Ortega (7 digs).
Chris Vergnaud and CSN had their hands full as they turned the page on non-conference play and prepared to challenge the #4 ranked Snow College Badgers on the road.
Southern Nevada hung tough in the opening set, with both teams exchanging leads until CSN was edged out late 20-25 in set one. A motivate and resilient group of Lady Coyotes finished the fight in set two 25-22, evening the match up at 1 set apiece. Set three was a dogfight to the finish, but unfortunately for Southern Nevada it was the Badgers who made enough plays down the stretch to squeeze out a 23-25 victory to put themselves on the brink of a match victory. Set four was another nip and tuck affair, however the Lady Coyotes found themselves on the short end of the stick again as they dropped the set 22-25 and the match 3 sets to 1. Despite losing the match, Coach Vergnaud heaped praise upon his young group of Lady Coyotes as they took a huge step towards competing on a regular basis in one of the premier volleyball conferences in the entire NJCAA.
