Matadors’ big second quarter drops Lady Coyotes in Yuma

Box Score YUMA, Ariz. — A decisive second-quarter run by Arizona Western College proved too much to overcome as the College of Southern Nevada Lady Coyotes fell 72–39 Saturday afternoon at "The House" on the Arizona Western campus in ACCAC play.

CSN stayed within striking distance early, trailing just 9–6 after a defensive-minded opening quarter, but the Matadors caught fire in the second period. Arizona Western erupted for 32 points in the frame, stretching the margin to 41–13 at halftime and seizing full control of the contest.

The Lady Coyotes opened the game competing on the glass and forcing turnovers, with Saroiya Ajomale accounting for CSN's first four points and Alanna Jackson creating second-chance opportunities inside. Trista Mabry closed the first quarter at the free-throw line, trimming the deficit to three and giving CSN momentum heading into the second.

That momentum was quickly halted as Arizona Western found its rhythm offensively. The Matadors connected on a series of perimeter shots and capitalized on transition chances, turning defensive stops into quick scores. CSN struggled to find consistent looks during the stretch, managing just seven points in the quarter as Arizona Western pushed the lead to 28.

Despite the deficit, the Lady Coyotes continued to battle in the second half. Ajomale opened the third quarter with a basket and free throw, while Jackson provided a spark inside with multiple offensive rebounds and finishes in the paint. Arizona Western, however, answered every run, maintaining control with timely three-pointers and steady ball movement.

CSN continued to rotate players throughout the second half, looking for combinations to slow the Matadors' attack. Elizebeth Mahavong provided energy off the bench, scoring late in the third and again in the fourth, while Leah Mitchell added a pair of baskets down the stretch as the Coyotes played through the final horn.

Ajomale and Mahavong led CSN with nine points apiece, and Jackson chipped in eight points while pulling down a team-high eight rebounds. Mabry and Alana Conner rounded out the scoring as the Lady Coyotes worked to generate offense against Arizona Western's pressure.

Arizona Western was paced by Mable Doumbia and Kimora Jenkins with 13 points each. Doumbia added a strong all-around performance with rebounds, assists and steals, while Jenkins knocked down multiple three-pointers during the decisive second-quarter run.

The loss moves CSN to 13–5 overall and 2–2 in ACCAC play. The Lady Coyotes will look to regroup quickly as they remain on the road, traveling to Thatcher, Arizona, on Wednesday, Jan. 21, to face Eastern Arizona College.
