After a rough weekend at home that resulted in a pair of losses to conference leading Snow College the Lady Coyotes hit the road for a crucial three match stretch of games in Price, Utah and Craig, Colorado. Despite being mired in a three game losing streak the teams overall moral was high and focused on the task at hand.
The opening match of the road trip was a chance for CSN to exact a measure of revenge over a USU-Eastern team that handed them a 3-1 conference opening home defeat a month earlier.
Sophomore scoring machine
Nadia Hernandez got the scoring started with a goal in the 45
th minute that sent her Coyotes to the locker room with a lead for the first time in four matches; unfortunately it would be the only goal of the afternoon for CSN.
The Eagles got on the board just six minutes into the second half when Ryan Virgil put a shot past star keeper
Carolina Velasquez to knot the match up at a goal apiece. The match would remain tied for the remainder of regulation, forcing the coyotes into overtime for just the second time this season. Just three short minutes into the extra period the Eagles Alexi Barbosa put a clutch kick into the back of the net to send the Coyotes to a fourth consecutive loss.
With only a single goal scored in its last five matches, Coach Schultz knew she needed her team to take more chances offensively in order to generate more scoring opportunities. Super sophmore
Nadia Hernandez got the message loud and clear, scoring her second goal of the weekend at the 15 minute mark, putting CSN on the scoreboard first for the second consecutive match. Eastern's McKenna Brown tied the match up in the 27
th minute and both teams headed into the half deadlocked 1-1. Both teams struggled to generate scoring opportunities in the second half until Eastern' s Ryan Virgil and CSN's
Nadia Hernandez lit up the scoreboard in the 78
th and 80
th minutes of the second half, knotting the match up 2-2. The Eagles became the aggressor over the final ten minutes of the match, tallying goals in the 84
th and 88
th minute to pull away from the Coyotes for good. USU-Eastern defeated CSN 4-2, sweeping all three meetings with the Coyotes .Dropping them to 2-6-1 in SWAC play.
Even the tightest knit teams become somewhat divided after six consecutive matches without a victory, however instead of pointing the finger at one another this young group of Coyotes decided to band together and put this six match winless streak to bed once and for all Saturday afternoon in Rangely, Colorado. CSN peppered the Spartan net with 22 shots on goal in the first half alone and it resulted in four goals over the first 29:40 of the match.
Carli Perkins (5:34),
Gabby DeLeon (6:51),
Sasha Escamilla (15:56) and
Kimberly Olivares (29:40) each tallied goals in the first half as CSN took a commanding 4-0 lead into halftime. Midfielders
Fabiana Romano and
Faith Ezelle scored the fifth and sixth goals of the match for the Coyotes ten minutes into the second half, expanding the lead to 6-0. With the game well in hand cornerback
Sasha Escamilla added her second goal of the match and star forward
Nadia Hernandez put the icing on the cake with her fourth and fifth goals of the road trip.
CSN eviscerated CNCC 9-0 to snap the teams six match winless streak and get back to its winning ways. The victory improved the Coyotes to 3-6-1 in SWAC play and 8-6-1 overall.
Coyote fans make plans to join us out at Heritage Park on Thursday October 20
th as we honor a special group of sophomores prior to its final home match of the season versus the Salt Lake Community College Bruins.
