Since a controversial 0-0 opening match draw in which overtime was mysteriously not played, the CSN Men's Soccer team has finished off its next six opponents in impressive fashion to remain unbeaten and continue to set the early pace in the SWAC race.
Heading into this past weekend's matches CSN had outscored its opponents 28-3, including five shutouts in the teams seven games played. The Coyotes welcomed the Colorado Northwestern Community College Spartans to Henderson, Nevada for a pair of weekend matches Friday and Saturday afternoon.
Local Desert Pines HS graduate and CSN freshman
Ozwaldo Medina dented the scoreboard first for the Coyotes with an unassisted goal at the 29:19 mark of the first half.
Eduardo Martinez followed up with the team's second goal of the match just five minutes later to extend the Coyotes lead to 2-0. With just five minutes left before halftime Medina put a pair of goals past the Spartans keeper, to record the first hat trick of his collegiate career with a key assist on his second from
Antonio Trama, giving the Coyotes a comfortable 4-0 cushion heading into the half.
CSN spent much of the second half playing keep away and controlling the time of possession; however a penalty in the 89
th minute allowed
Kebba Jobe the opportunity at a penalty kick. The freshman from Sierra Vista HS cashed in the scoring opportunity, giving CSN its fifth goal of the match. CSN defeated CNCC 5-1 in the opening match of the weekend to improve its conference record to 2-0 and overall season mark to 7-0-1.
After seeing what each side had to offer on Friday, both teams settled in and played a much closer and competitive contest Saturday afternoon.
The match included three yellow cards on the Spartans and a red card on
Momodou Kinteh of CSN in the 59
th minute that forced the Coyotes to play a man down for the final 30 minutes of the match.
Freshman
Ozwaldo Medina carried over his stellar play from Friday and scored the first goal of the match off a clutch assist from teammate
Raul Sanchez at the 22:27 mark of the first half. The Coyotes would play solid team defense all match in front of goalkeeper
Miguel Navarrete and despite being a man down for much of the second half, the team was still able to put a shorthanded goal on the board.
The goal was scored at 83:11 of the match when
Antonio Trama took a beautiful pass from
Stefan Skrinjaric and put it in the CNCC net to seal the deal on another Coyote victory.
CSN defeated CNCC 2-0 in the second match of the weekend, remaining unbeaten in nine matches played this season and improving to 3-0 in Scenic West Athletic Conference play.
Fans your Men's Soccer team will be on the road this week for a pair of matches in Taylorsville, Utah where they will battle the Salt Lake City Community College Bruins in matches Friday and Saturday afternoon.
