Following an unbeaten weekend at "the den" the CSN Men's soccer team embarked on a road trip to the Golden state where they would battle Mount San Antonio College and Victor Valley College in the team's final non-conference tests of the season.
Despite a flat tire on the team bus, Southern Nevada was able to make it to Walnut, California in time to battle Mt. San Antonio College Saturday evening. The Mounties came out of the gate on the attack offensively and that persistence paid off as they were able to put one past keeper
Adrian Zacarias just five minutes into the contest. Southern Nevada found the equalizer in the 16
th minute when former Bonanza Bengal
Manuel Ponce found the back of the net courtesy of a perfect setup off the foot of fellow freshman Marcos Del Angel-Parra to knot things up 1-1. The game remained tied until Mt. Sac scored a goal in the 38
th minute to take a 2-1 lead into intermission. Both teams came out of the locker looking to show up the defensive side of the ball and it was a success as the match went nearly 40 minutes until the next score. Unfortunately for CSN it was Mt. Sac who tallied an unassisted goal in the 83
rd minute to extend its lead over the Coyotes to 3-1. The Mounties added a meaningless goal in the 86
th minute to hand CSN its most lopsided loss of the season, 4-1.
Losses have been few and far between for the 20
th ranked team in the NJCAA, as a matter of fact it's been nearly a calendar year since the team lost consecutive matches. The Coyotes found themselves immersed in a defensive battle to begin play Sunday afternoon versus Victor Valley College. Both the Rams and Coyotes competed for valiantly as both teams looked for the first goal of the match. SWAC keeper of the year
Miguel Navarrete returned to form Sunday in a huge way, keeping the Rams off the scoreboard for the entire 90 minutes of play. Despite the sharpness of Navarrete the Southern Nevada offense was unable to dent the scoreboard in the first half, as both teams headed to the locker room scoreless. Coach Hawkins made the proper adjustments at halftime and they paid dividends with three second half goals. The first came at the 62 minute mark when freshman Musio Jiminez converted a perfect feed from
Stefan Skrinjaric into the first goal of the match. With CSN up 1-0
Momodou Kinteh took a slick pass from Musio Jiminez and turned it into the Coyotes second goal of the match. With the match well in-hand "Mo" Kinteh hit freshman
Diego Nieves in stride to earn the assist on Southern Nevada's third goal of the match in the 89
th minute of play. CSN dominated VVC 3-0 to earn a split on its California road trip as they prepare to face the CNCC Spartans this upcoming weekend.
