Yavapai College Volleyball Tournament

HENDERSON, Nev. (August 29, 2019) – The College of Southern Nevada volleyball team had a successful start to the season last weekend, going 3-1 in a home tournament that featured quality regional competition.

The Lady Coyotes will get more of the same over the upcoming weekend as they travel to play in a four-match tournament hosted by Yavapai College in Arizona. The tourney will feature teams from throughout the state of Arizona, along with a few other regionally-known programs from the southwestern United States.

After the strong start Southern Nevada experienced last weekend, CSN coach Chris Vergnaud said his team is excited to continue building on their success.

"For the first time in program history, the Lady Coyotes start the season 3-1," he said. "I was pleasantly surprised at how well this group battled in our home opener. It is always a gamble with a young group, however, they managed to get along pretty well and work towards our common preseason goals."

Southern Nevada had three strong wins last weekend, including a 3-0 sweep of East L.A. College to end the tournament on Saturday. Other than a loss to Mesa Community College, the Lady Coyotes lost only two sets in their three match victories.

CSN will play two matches on Friday and two matches on Saturday. First, the Lady Coyotes will play Eastern Arizona at 9:00 a.m. and then host Yavapai at 3:00 p.m., followed up by matches on Saturday against New Mexico Junior College at 12:00 p.m. and South Mountain at 6:00 p.m.

Vergnaud said the teams in the Yavapai tourney will provide a good benchmark of where the CSN program is in relation to other successful programs, regionally.

"I am excited to see how our team handles the pressure of traveling and playing on the road for the first time this season," he said. "We will be facing some well coached teams who will force us to play at our best. I am looking for our team to show consistency and to build from this previous weekend. This team likes to have fun, laugh a lot, and is not afraid to put in the grind every day. This will be a fun weekend of volleyball."

Following the Yavapai tourney, the Lady Coyotes will travel to Phoenix the following weekend then back to the CSN Sports Center the last of their non-conference matches. CSN will begin Scenic West Athletic Conference play on Sept. 28 against Snow College.
