Box Score 2 By James Hernandez The Coyotes were on the move this weekend as they opened up conference play Friday night in Price, Utah to face the USU-Eastern Golden Eagles.They wrapped up the weekend Saturday afternoon with a match in Rangely, Colorado versus the CNCC Spartans.
School history was made Friday as the CSN Volleyball team played its first ever conference match, however this was not the first time the Coyotes matched up with the Golden Eagles. Both teams faced off in the first ever CSN Coyote Volleyball Classic on August 28th and 29th in Las Vegas. The two matches were extremely competitive with CSN losing the first match 3-1 and forcing a winner take all fifth set, before falling in the second match 3-2. The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead in the opening set and never looked back, defeating the Coyotes (25-12). Sets two and three were mirror images of one another as USU-eastern outlasted CSN by scores (25-15) and (25-16), winning the match in straight sets. Standout Christina Beaver led the Coyotes in both assists (18) and digs (10) while Bailey Bergquist (8), JoHanna Alvarez-Thompson (6) and Olivia Stet (4) combined for 20 of the teams 25 kills.
The Coyotes were forced to regroup in a hurry as they rolled into Rangely, Colorado for a SWAC conference battle with the Spartans. CSN and CNCC went back and forth during the first two sets of the match with the Spartans getting the better of the Coyotes by scores of (25-17) and (25-19). With its back against the wall this 2015 CSN team showed true determination and heart as they rallied to win the third set of the match by a score of (25-22) and extend the match to a fourth set. The Coyotes used the momentum of a victory in the third set to shake off mental and physical fatigue, hang right with the Spartans point for point before losing the fourth set of the match (25-20). Christina Beaver was her usual playmaking self, making plays all over the court and setting up her teammates with a match high 43 assists. Michelle Moe (12) and Hannah Karas (11) led the team in digs and offensively JoHannah Alvarez-Thompson (19), Bailey Bergquist (16) and Olivia Stet (8) did the heavy lifting, combining for 43 of the teams 48 kills.
Fans your Coyotes are finally back home! Make your plans to come out to the CSN Sports Center and support CSN as they host the College of Southern Idaho on Thursday October 1st at 7:00 p.m. followed by a 1:00 p.m. conference clash with the Salt Lake Community College Bruins on Saturday afternoon.
