Coming of its first setback of the season last week in Salt Lake, CSN returned home looking to right the ship and get back to the winning ways.
Coach
Geoff Hawkins and his Coyotes have looked like a completely different animal at home, posting a perfect 7-0 record and outscoring its opponents by a combined 30-4 margin. With the season just past the midway point this was a crucial weekend for both the Coyotes (3-2) and Badgers (2-3), who were two and three games behind the conference leading Bruins (5-0-1 SWAC).
The first match of the weekend was an ultra-competitive, nip and tuck battle that saw both teams play to a scoreless tie through the first 45 minutes of the match. Halftime adjustments are a crucial part of any sport and CSN's coaching staff was able to push the right buttons and the team responded with a spirited effort on both sides of the ball.
The Badgers were up to the task and matched the Coyotes play for play until the 74th minute when
Kebba Jobe took a gorgeous pass from
Jose Morales and put it past Snow goalie Justin Jones for the games first goal. Eight minutes later
Jose Morales took it upon himself to put the proverbial icing on the cake when he found the back of the net in the 82nd minute of the match to close the show in style.
CSN defeated Snow College by a final score of 2-0, improving its SWAC record to 4-2.
Less than 24 hours after a grueling high intensity conference match both teams were back at it in a game that turned out to be a mirror image of the previous days clash. Once again we saw a scoreless tie at the half, despite the Coyotes outshooting the Badgers 14-7. The game remained scoreless until the star of the weekend
Jose Morales (2 goals, 1 assist) clutched up to break the scoreless tie in the 77th minute with a big assist from
Genaro Corona. Just seven minutes later
Stefan Skrinjaric and
Genaro Corona played the two man game to perfection, resulting in a goal by Skrinjaric and a second assist for Corona. The defensive game plan for the Coyotes was executed to perfection, allowing standout keeper
Miguel Navarrete to post his second shutout of the weekend and eighth of the season. CSN defeated Snow College 2-0, improving to 5-2 in conference and 10-2-1 overall.
The Coyotes are on the road this week for a crucial stretch of conference matches beginning Thursday and Friday in Price, Utah versus the USU-Eagles, followed by a Saturday afternoon showdown in Craig, Colorado with the CNCC Spartans.
