With only two matches left in the regular season Men's soccer coach
Geoff Hawkins and his Coyotes were looking to solidify the second seed in next week's SWAC tournament and continue to fine-tune play ,with the postseason just around the corner.
The final home match of the year on Thursday versus the Bruins was significant for two reasons; it was a chance for the Coyotes to avenge a pair of road losses in Utah a month earlier as well as an opportunity to end the home season unbeaten with a win or tie.
Sophomore forward
Genaro Corona took a pass from
Roberto Elicero and found the back of the Bruins net just 6:19 into the match to put CSN up 1-0 early. Unfortunately for the Coyotes Salt Lake would rally to score three goals in the next 19 minutes of play to take a commanding 3-1 lead into the locker room.
The Bruins would maintain a two goal lead until Genaro clutched up with his second goal of the match in the 75
th minute, this time with a huge assist from
Randy Casas to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The play was fast and furious down the stretch, with both teams playing a very physical brand of soccer. Salt Lake had all but cemented the game by playing keep away from CSN, however in the 90
th minute Eddie Martinez would rise up and score the equalizer to send this match into overtime tied at 3 a piece.
Both teams competed admirably in overtime, but the physical and mental exhaustion was apparent on both sides as the teams played a scoreless overtime period.
CSN completed its home schedule 9-0-1 after its 3-3 draw with first place Salt Lake on Thursday afternoon.
Just 48 hours later the Coyotes found themselves in Ephraim, Utah for its final regular season match of the season versus the Snow College Badgers. CSN defeated the Badgers by identical 2-0 scores in the team's first two meetings earlier this season in Henderson, Nevada.
Both the Badgers and Coyotes came out a bit sluggish to begin the match and despite CSN outshooting Snow College 11-5 in the first 45 minutes of play both teams went into halftime scoreless. After Coach Hawkins and his staff tweaked a few things during the intermission, his Coyotes came out of the locker room with a renewed sense of urgency and effort.
The adjustments paid immediate dividends when the star forward
Genaro Corona provided
Eddie Mercado with a beautiful pass that he was able to put past the Badger keeper and give CSN its first lead of the match 1-0.
Speaking of stars, goalkeeper
Miguel Navarrete made sure that Mercado's goal would hold up as he turned away all four shots on goal, from the Badgers to post his conference leading 10
th shutout of the season and third versus the Badgers alone.
CSN defeated Snow College 1-0 to wrap up a very successful 13-3-2 campaign in the program's first year of existence.
The win clinched the number two seed in next week's SWAC tournament which will be played in Taylorsville, Utah beginning on Thursday October 27
th.
