The College of Southern Nevada said goodbye to three very special sophomores this weekend as
Maggie Manwarren,
Chelsea Perez and Tiana (Tee) Tapuala played the final game of their Coyote careers. Saturday marked another goodbye of sorts as the two Silver State rivals faced off for the last time as members of the Scenic West Athletic Conference.
Game one featured Lady Coyote team wins leader
Shonda Badayos (6-17) versus the Wildcats 2016 wins leader Kristina George (10-8).
Both teams struck for a pair of runs in the first inning, highlighted a pair of RBI singles from
Kara Simpson and
Emily Guthrie. Unfortunately for CSN the Wildcats would score 14 of the game's final 16 runs. Guthrie and Simpson would each add a second RBI to their daily total, but it wasn't enough to unseat our rivals from the north. CSN was defeated in game one of the weekend by a final score of 16-4.
Western Nevada began the game by scoring the first twelve runs of the game and buried the Lady Coyotes before they knew what hit them.
Amber Calderon was the lone bright spot for CSN when her pinch hit double in the bottom of the fourth inning scored
Kara Simpson from second base, ending the Wildcats attempt at a shutout. Western sophomore Dakota Robinson extended the lead to 15-1 with a three-run blast in the top half of the fifth inning. WNC defeated CSN 15-1 in five innings to capture the second game of the weekend.
The third game of the weekend was highlighted by a tribute to the three sophomores, who were playing their final game in a Lady Coyotes uniform.
After the pregame festivities concluded we were treated to a pitching rematch of the series opener between
Shonda Badayos and Kristina George.
The Wildcats pounced on the Coyotes early, plating ten runs before CSN could record its ninth out of the game. Lady Coyote third baseman
Chandie Perez singled, with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break up George's perfect game. WNC defeated CSN 15-0 in game three of the weekend to capture the season series 5-2 over its in-state rival.
The fourth and final game of the weekend was postponed due a rain storm that soaked the field and left conditions unfit for further play. No makeup date is scheduled.
The 2016 CSN Coyotes Softball team finished the regular season 10-38 overall and 4-35 in the SWAC.
The Lady Coyotes will travel to Norma Carr Field on Taylorsville Redwood campus in Salt Lake City, Utah this weekend to participate in the 2016 Region XVIII Softball Championships from May 11
th-13
th.
The Region XVIII winner will receive an automatic bid to the NJCAA National Tournament which will be held in St. George, UT from May 18-21.
