Head coach
Geoff Hawkins and his coaching staff looked to make some minor adjustments and fine tune the teams overall play in the final weekend of non-conference action before Scenic West Athletic Conference play.
The opening match of the weekend for the Coyotes was versus the Western Nevada College Club Wildcats.
Genaro Corona tallied the lone goal of a very competitive first half of play at the 14:02 mark, with a huge assist off the foot of local Cimarron Memorial Spartan graduate
Roberto Elicero, that sent the Coyotes into the locker room with a 1-0 lead.
Stefan Skrinjaric tallied CSN's second goal of the match when his penalty kick 60:52 into the match found the back of the net and just three minutes later
Antonio Trama gave
Roberto Elicero his second assist of the match with a perfectly placed ball that was just out of the reach of the Wildcats goalkeeper.
Kebba Jobe,
Richard Dougherty and
Randy Casas added a goal each during the final ten minutes of the match with assists from
Ozwaldo Medina and
Oscar Mata to double the lead and propel the Coyotes to a 6-0 victory over the visiting Wildcats.
CSN goalkeeper
Miguel Navarrete continued his stellar play in net on his way to his fourth shutout in the team's first five matches of the season.
The College of the Siskiyous Eagles came into Friday's match trying to figure out a way to penetrate a stellar CSN defensive backfield that had allowed just a single goal in the team's first five matches of the season. The Coyotes dictated the pace of play all afternoon long and scored the matches first goal just 14:04 into the first half when former Clark Charger
Eduardo Martinez found the back of the net.
Genaro Corona and
Stefan Skrinjaric would tally goals two and three of the first half just 90 seconds apart, to extend CSN's lead to 3-0 as the two teams headed into halftime.
The Eagles would forego any sort of consistent offensive attack in the second period in an attempt to slow down the Coyotes offensively, but the strategy was only effective until the 89
th minute of the match when
Antonio Trama and
Ozwaldo Medina netted a pair of goals just two minutes apart to cement CSN's fifth victory in its first six matches.
Defensively the Coyotes were stellar as usual, as they allowed just one shot on goal all match en route to a dominate 6-0 win that kept the team unbeaten on the season.
The final test of the weekend would be the teams stiffest of the young season as the Victor Valley College Rams came to town looking to hang an "L" on the Coyotes for the first time this season.
Eduardo Martinez scored the lone goal of a chippy first half that saw both teams put forth a physically intense effort in which every possession was contested on both sides of the ball.
Randy Casas put the Coyotes up 2-0 in the 49
th minute on a goal assisted by
Jose Morales, but in seemingly the blink of an eye Rams forward Josh Goodman put a pair of unassisted goals past Coyote keeper
Miguel Navarrete in the 52
nd and 60
th minute to knot the contest up at 2 goals apiece.
The resolve and mental toughness of both teams were tested down the stretch and in the 84
th minute freshman forward
Ricardo Gonzalez took a pass from
Eduardo Martinez and found put it past the Rams keeper to give CSN a 3-2 lead.
The Coyotes would hold off a late charge from VVC to preserve a hard-fought 3-2 victory and take an unbeaten 6-0-1 record into conference play.
CSN will host the Colorado Northwestern Community College Spartans for a pair of matches this Friday (9/23) and Saturday (9/24).
