This week on "Can you dig it" Coach Vergnaud and I recap CSN hosting the 2018 Lady Coyote Volleyball Invitational and preview the team's upcoming matches versus West Coast Baptist College and the Snow College Badgers.
James: The team went 2-2 this past weekend and is now 6-9 on the year. Give our readers your thoughts in the team 15 games into the season.
Coach Vergnaud: I am happy with the progress we have made as a program within the first 15 matches of the season. Statistically, we have improved in almost every category across the board from 2017 to 2018 (and this was done in preseason of 2018). Â Mentally, we are still learning on how to finish our sets while maintaining control our side of the net.
James: Â Despite dropping the match in straight sets to 10
th ranked Seward County, two of those three sets were razor-thin 25-22 setbacks that could have easily gone our way. How encouraged were you by that performance last Saturday?
Coach Vergnaud: I was pleased of how well our team showed up against #10 Seward County. I thought it gave us a great indication of how hard this group has been working during preseason. It was nice to see them finally click and have the confidence to go out and compete, as hard as they did, against a top 10 team. It just proves that what we are working on in practice is working. We just cannot stop working and getting better every day.
James: Can you provide our readers with a brief scouting report of this week's opponents, West Coast Baptist College and the Snow College Badgers?
Coach Vergnaud: Since this is my first year here at CSN, I do not know much about West Coast Baptist College. Our focus for the match will be controlling our side of the net and working on the little things to improve our team play. We will open our Scenic West play against Snow College. They are a well-coached team who have rightfully earned a top 5 national ranking. They tend to have a balanced attack and bring a lot of energy to the match.
James: What does the team need to do in order to have a quality showing in its SWAC opener Saturday in Ephraim, Utah?
Coach Vergnaud: We will need to control our side of the net, both mentally and physically. Pushing #10 Seward County to the limits gave us the confidence we needed as we head into conference play. We have to continue to trust the process, work on breaking each set up into increments, and know that every point matters.
James: What areas of the team have you and your coaching staff seen the most improvement? What areas would you like to see more improvement as the season moves along?
Coach Vergnaud : Serve receive has been our biggest improvement to date. We will continue to improve our serve receive throughout the year, however, to compete at a high level we will need to raise our court IQ and our ability to score points.
James: Thank you for your time this week Coach and best of luck this weekend.
