Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 By James HernandezThe Lady Coyotes hit the road for a weekend matchup with the two of the top three teams in the SWAC, CSI and SLCC. Both the Bruins and Golden Eagles were looking for the season sweep over CSN, after both teams claimed straight set match victories earlier this season in Southern Nevada.
It appeared as if the Coyotes got off to a bit of a sluggish start in the opening set of the match, but then again an eight hour bus can sometimes do that to you. The Golden Eagles wasted little time as they jumped out to a 15-5 lead and cruised to a (13-25) opening set win. CSN came out with a renewed sense of fight in the second set as they battled early on and stayed even with CSI, through the first four points of the set. Unfortunately for the Coyotes they were outscored 21-9 the rest of the way as the Golden Eagles emerged victorious in the second set (12-25). Coach Thurman's young team came out in the third set with a fight and desire to win that had to put a smile on the faces of its entire coaching staff. These young Coyotes played with a maturity beyond their years, as they dictated the pace of the third set, taking a 22-19 lead into the late stages of the set. Almost on cue the top team in the SWAC woke up and put CSN down with a 6-0 run to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and win the match in straight sets (13-25) (12-25) (22-25). The victory kept CSI atop the SWAC standings and gave the Golden Eagles the home sweep over the Coyotes. Match standouts for CSN included
Christina Beaver with 15 assists, Johanna Alvarez-Thompson with 8 kills and libero
Hannah Karas with 10 digs.
Taylorsville, UT was the sight for CSN's second match of the weekend as the team went into the afternoon matchup with the Bruins, hoping to exact a bit of revenge on a team that invaded the coyote den just three weeks earlier and left with a straight sets victory in the match.
The opening set was a nip and tuck battle as the Coyotes gave the Bruins all they could handle early on, only trailing 12-10 before SLCC closed the set on a 13-4 run to claim an opening set victory (14-25). Set two was dictated by CSN early on, as the Coyotes held a 9-7 edge nearly halfway through the set, but once again found itself on the wrong side of an 18-8 run that propelled the Bruins to a (17-25) second set victory and a commanding two sets to zero lead in the match. It must of felt like déjà vu for the Coyotes in the third set of the match as they raced out to a 10-7 lead before the Bruins came storming back. This time SLCC closed the set on an 18-7 sprint to the finish line to defeat CSN in straight sets (14-25) (17-25) (17-25) and earn the season sweep over the Coyotes. The dynamic duo of
JoHanna Alvarez-Thompson and
Bailey Bergquist led the team with a combined 17 points and 16 kills, while
Christina Beaver led the team with 19 assists and libero
Hannah Karas chipped in with 15 digs. Â Â
