Lady Coyote Volleyball Stuns #6 Snow College Badgers

Box Score

By James Hernandez

Just one week ago Coach Thurman and her team earned its first Scenic West Athletic Conference victory over Colorado Northwestern Community College in 5 sets, however few outside the team believed they had a shot at taking down the sixth ranked Snow College.

The phrase "that's why they play the games" was coined for a reason, and it was never more appropriately stated than Saturday afternoon during the Lady Coyotes matchup with the Badgers. CSN's inaugural volleyball class had yet to earn that key program defining win that is essentially to the growth and development of a program still in its infancy stages, and with only six conference matches left in the regular season this special group of sophomore's were running out of time to make that dream a reality.

The Coyotes jumped on the Badgers early, using a lively and boisterous crowd to seize momentum of the match and take the opening set (25-18). Snow College would battle back to grab the second set (18-25) and looked as if they had righted the ship and were on the way to victory, however on this afternoon CSN would not be denied.

After a back and forth third set that saw eight ties, it was the Lady Coyotes not the sixth ranked Badgers who showed the poise and leadership necessary to come up with the clutch play necessary to grab the third set (26-24) and put Snow on the brink of a loss.

The fourth and final set was just a reminder of how badly CSN wanted the win. Despite exerting massive amounts of energy the Lady Coyotes executed flawlessly around the net and in the return game to blow past the Badgers (25-18) in set four to claim the match.

CSN defeated Snow College (25-18, 18-25, 26-24 and 25-18) to earn the programs first ever victory over a ranked opponent. JoHanna Alvarez-Thompson had an outstanding match on both ends of the court with a team high 18 kills to along with a very clutch 10 kills. Olivia Stet was a mainstay around the net with a team high 8 blocks and defensive star Hannah Karas paced the team in digs with 14 and aces with 4. Christina Beaver once again proved her excellence, setting up point after point with a team high 43 assists.

Our Lady Coyotes will be back on the road this weekend with matches versus the nationally ranked  #10 SLCC Bruins and #3 CSI Golden Eagles.
