With only three regular season matches remaining in 2016, Coach Thurman and her staff were hoping to fine tune some areas of the teams play heading into the 2016 SWAC tournament.
Colorado Northwestern Community College came to town Thursday with payback on its mind after the Lady Coyotes were able to defeat the Spartans in a five set nail biter just a few weeks earlier in Rangely, Colorado.
It was as if both teams picked up right where the first match left off, with each side alternating points in an evenly matched conference clash. The Lady Coyotes claimed sets one and three by identical (25-23) scores, but the Spartans would find a way to outlast CSN (22-25 and 19-25) in sets two and four.
For the second time this season these two schools would need a fifth and deciding set to determine a winner. The Spartans raced out to a 13-5 lead, but the Lady Coyotes would score eight of the sets next nine points to cut its deficit to one (13-14) with some clutch play down the stretch.
Unfortunately for our Lady Coyotes the comeback fell just short as the Spartans claimed the fifth and deciding set (13-15).
CSN dropped a five set heartbreaker to CNCC (25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 19-25 and 13-15). Match standouts for the Lady Coyotes included
JoHanna Alvarez-Thompson and
Jaycie Johnson (28 combined kills) as well as
Christina Beaver (44 assists) and
Hannah Karas (21 Digs).
The "Coyote Den" was full of emotion and good vibes on Saturday as the College of Southern Nevada paid tribute to the first-ever sophomore volleyball class in school history.
Ten very deserving sophomores and their families were honored in a pre-match ceremony before the team's final home match of the season versus the USU-Eastern Eagles.
The Lady Coyotes fed off of the buildings energy in the opening set as they outlasted the Eagles 28-26 to claim the opening set of the match.
Unfortunately for CSN, the Eagles would respond by claiming the final three sets of the match and send the Lady Coyotes to a fourth consecutive loss. USU-Eastern defeated CSN (28-26, 22-25, 21-25 and 23-25).
The loss dropped the Coyotes to 2-7 in SWAC play and 9-16 overall.
JoHanna Alvarez-Thompson had one of her best all-around games of the year with 15 kills, 3 aces and 14 digs and sophomores
Christina Beaver (35 assists),
Olivia Stet (8 blocks) and
Hannah Karas (19 digs) paced the team in their respective categories.
CSN will play its final regular season match on Saturday October 29
th in Ephraim, Utah versus the Snow College Badgers.
