After competing favorably, but falling short to a pair of top ten ranked opponents the Lady Coyotes hit the road looking for better results in Price, Utah and Rangely, Colorado this past weekend. Head coach
Sue Thurman and entire staff were in search of the programs first SWAC victory and despite a number of near misses her team appeared to be in a prime position to earn its first conference win this weekend.
CSN opened up play versus the USU-Eastern Eagles in a dynamite match that required a fifth and deciding set to determine a winner. The Eagles jumped ahead early, winning the first two sets of the match (22-25 and 17-25), outworking the Coyotes at the net and in the service game. The Lady Coyotes were in need of a momentum change and after a dominant (25-13) win in set three of the match they were able to outlast the Eagles (25-21) in set four to force a fifth and deciding set to determine a winner.
USU-Eastern was able to shake off losses in sets three and four to come up clutch and dispatch the Coyotes (7-15) in a thrilling winner-take-all fifth set. The loss dropped CSN to 0-3 in SWAC play and 7-12 overall on the year.
Match standouts for the Coyotes included
Bailey Bergquist (17 kills) and
JoHanna Alvarez-Thompson (12 kills, 15 digs),
Christina Beaver with a match high 50 assists and sophomore
Sam Remer coming up clutch with a team high 16 digs.
The final match of the weekend for CSN was a Saturday afternoon matinee in Rangely, Colorado to battle the Colorado Northwestern Community College Spartans.
Both teams came into the match winless in conference despite playing some very competitive volleyball throughout the season. The Lady Spartans wasted little time jumping on the Coyotes early, claiming a dominant opening set victory (9-25). CSN responded with a clutch second set win (26-24); however CNCC was able to claim set three of the match (19-25) and put the Coyotes on the brink of its fourth consecutive conference loss. Instead of mailing it in Coach Thurman and her lady Coyotes got off of the mat and rallied to claim a win in set four (25-22) and force a fifth and deciding set for the second consecutive match.
This time CSN emptied the tank, leaving it all out on the court and when the dust settled the lady Coyotes had claimed its first SWAC victory in program history (15-11). The victory improved CSN's conference record to 1-3 and overall season mark to 8-12.
Johanna Alvarez-Thompson led the team with 15 kills, freshman Tajahae (Tata) Davis led her team with 6 blocks and sophomore team leaders
Christina Beaver (44 assists) and
Hannah Karas (24 digs) paced the lady Coyotes in assists and blocks.
Your Lady Coyotes return to the "coyote den" for a Saturday afternoon matchup with the Snow College Badgers.
