Another weekend road trip awaited head coach
Sue Thurman and her Coyotes in week 3.
Once again the destination was the Grand Canyon State as CSN was one of six teams participating in the Scottsdale Classic Volleyball Tournament.
The opening match of the tournament for CSN was a matchup with the Central Arizona College Vaqueras. Coming off a winless weekend the Lady Coyotes were hungry for a victory and they were able to set the tone of the match with a dominant opening set victory (25-12). After CAC leveled the match at a set apiece with a hard fought (20-25) second set win CSN was able to win sets three (25-13) and four (25-17) to secure a match victory and end a five match losing skid.
Bailey Bergquist and
Olivia Stet teamed up for 23 of the matches 33 kills, set-up master
Christina Beaver paced the Coyotes with 26 assists and defensive ace
Hannah Karas led CSN with 18 digs.
Game two of the day was a rematch from last weekend's Yavapai Volleyball Classic with the Eastern Arizona College Gila Monsters.
CSN entered the match hoping to exact a measure of revenge on an EAC team that defeated them 3 sets to 1 just a week earlier. The Gila Monsters once again used its height advantage to win crucial points around the net and eventually outlast the lady coyotes in an extremely competitive match (20-25, 25-22, 25-19, and 25-21) three sets to one.
The usual suspects filled the stat sheets for CSN;
Bailey Bergquist (15 kills),
Christina Beaver (30 assists) and
Sam Remer (20 digs) led a balanced Coyotes attack that competed admirably with arguably its toughest opponent of the young season.
The second day of the tournament got underway bright and early for the Coyotes versus the Glendale Community College Gauchos at 8:00 a.m.
Dropping a back and forth opening set (22-25) seemed to take the wind out of the lady coyotes sails and although they were able to fight back and win the second set of the match (25-19) they would eventually drop sets three (15-25) and four (16-25) on its way to the teams second defeat of the tournament.
Olivia Stet and Johanna Alvarez-Thompson tied for the team lead in kills with 8 each and
Christina Beaver was all over the court as usual, pacing CSN in assists (24) and digs (14) while continuing to be the consummate team player.
The final match of the day was crucial for coach Thurman's Coyotes to capture in order for them to salvage a split and take some momentum back to Vegas for the teams final non-conference matches of the 2016 season.
Standing in CSN's way were the Fighting Artichokes of Scottsdale Community College.
The opening set of the match went to extra points and despite both teams' best efforts to gain an advantage it took thirty points for CSN to finally claim the opening set of the match (30-28) and set itself up for victory. The Coyotes clawed their way to a (25-16) victory in the second set of the match and closed out tournament play in style with a thrilling (25-20) fourth set win to claim the team's second match of the tournament, improving to 4-8 on the season.
Match standouts included
Bailey Bergquist (16 kills) and
Olivia Stet (15 kills and 5 blocks) with a combined 31 kills and
Christina Beaver set the table all match long with an eye popping 53 assists.
The lady coyotes return home this weekend for its final non-conference test's before opening up SWAC play Thursday September 22 versus the defending NJCAA volleyball national champion College of Southern Idaho Golden Eagles.
